Someone asked me where the source is to sit shivah when a relative becomes an apikores or marries a non-Jew. Does anyone know where it’s from?

I know that R’ Shlomo Eiger sat shiva when his son became chassidish, because he held it was apikursis, but that doesn’t give an inside source.

I dont think there is a source in halacha, it’s just what people did.

It’s minhag ashkenaz. No source in halakha. AFAIK sefardim don’t.

The idea of Shiva is Kovod Hamess. Who are you trying to honor when he goes off the D?

The honor is to the meis, but sitting shiva is also an expression of profound grief. You would agree, would you not, that for a child to become a meshumad or marry a goy, would cause extensive grief to the parents and family members? Going off the derech is NOT the same thing, btw, event hough ti cause agmas nefesh.
