Does anyone in the Coffee Room know the source of the preference to sit during the first ברכות of קריאת שמע, as mentioned in the Artscroll’s Siddur instructions?

Ask your local Orthodox Rabbi, because the YWN Coffee Room is not really the place to ask Halachic questions.

Square root- I disagree- The OP did not ask others to pasken. He/she is asking a general question, which in yeshiva we call “talking in learning”. You could do the same by asking Chat GPT and looking up the sources yourself. I saved you the trouble…..

Good question — the halacha of sitting for the berachos of Kriyas Shema (the two before and one after Shema in Shacharis, and two before and two after in Ma’ariv) is discussed explicitly in the Rishonim and Shulchan Aruch.

    Here are the main sources:

    1. Mishnah & Gemara

Berachos 10a–10b: The Mishnah discusses whether one must recite Shema itself standing, sitting, or in any position. Beis Shammai required lying down at night and standing in the morning, while Beis Hillel ruled “everyone recites according to his way.”
→ This debate is about Shema itself, not its berachos, but it sets the stage.

    2. Rishonim on the Berachos

Rosh, Berachos 1:5 writes: although Shema can be recited in any position, the berachos of Shema were established to be recited in the manner of Tefillah, sitting.

Tur, Orach Chaim 59: “The berachos of Shema should not be recited while walking but rather while sitting, just like Tefillah, which requires kavana.”

    3. Shulchan Aruch

    Orach Chaim 59:3:

“One may not recite the berachos of Kriyas Shema while walking, or while doing work, or while riding, but rather he should sit.”

Rema ad loc. adds: If one needs to, he may recite them while standing, but l’chatchila they are said while sitting.

    4. Mishna Berurah

M.B. 59:12 explains: the reason is that the berachos require greater concentration than Shema itself, and walking interferes with kavana.

However, standing is allowed, since it doesn’t detract from kavana — but sitting is the proper minhag.

    ✅ Summary:
The source in halacha is Shulchan Aruch O.C. 59:3, based on the Rosh and Tur, that the berachos of Kriyas Shema should be recited while sitting (though standing is permitted), because they require kavana similar to Tefillah.

Would you like me to also bring you the Kabbalistic/Chassidic angle (like in the Arizal and later poskim) about specifically sitting for the berachos?

Thank you, Steven Wright (I love your stand-up).

To Square Root: I don’t think that this was a Halachic question, just looking for the source and Steven Wright was kind enough.

    Square

    1. Please note no halachic question was asked
    2. You are mistaken. Every nasrishkeit under the sun is discussed. All of a sudden hslacha no no no talking halacha.
Thsts absurd. Perhaps you meant people shouldn’t follow halachic peak they read on ywn. In which case sure. But to ask a question? Absolutely its the place. Should be more of it if anything

You should never cast aspersions on a Befeirushe Artscroll.

Does anyone in the Coffee Room know why Artscroll published seforim on Tosfes??

Rocky, when I read your contribution I was surprised for two reasons.
    1) I never knew you were such a Talmid Chochom
    2) I had never heard of any of these sources (besides the Mishna – which is totally irrelevant- and the Mishna Berurah) discussing this.

    So I looked them up.
And this is why you should never ask ChatGPT! Instead of artificial intelligence, all you get is artificial stupidity: NONE OF THESE SOURCES EXIST!!!
    CHATGPT MADE THEM UP!

there is an opinion that standing/sitting relates to who you are addressing: Hashem or congregation. Thus shome esre standing, shma sitting.

    there are other considerations:
    – standing near an open window might be stealing fresh air from others (Rav Salanter)
    – sitting in a place you are not a regular of, might be taking a makom kavua from someone. (AAQ). But I have some support: I came to a place that I visit sometimes and wanted to take my usual standing place. (according to above). To my “annoyance”,, the standing place was already taken – by a chassidishe tzaddik from further away place. He was apparently holding by both my shita on not taking makom kavua and also by coming early.
