I used to get many spam calls from India asking if I want solar energy or telling me they want to fix a problem on my computer. Over the last few days, I have been inundated with spam calls from a legitimate Jewish non-profit. I am the only one, or does anyone else feel less inclined to donate to an organization that uses robocalls to harass potential donors? Does anyone think “oh gee, I was not going to give a donation, but now that I received a robocall, I am inspired to donate! Thanks for the reminder!”
Calls are done because they work. Check IRS 991 form (or some charity-following sites) for the charity to see whether they are spending too much of your donations to solicit further donations rather than the core mission.
This is what bothers me the most about fundraising:
If you send a donation check to any one Chareidi charity,
within a few weeks or months, you will receive
fundraising requests from dozens of Chareidi charities.
Even if you send them a donation check with a note
requesting that you not be placed on any mailing list,
you will still receive fundraising mail from dozens of Chareidi charities.
Sadly, most “charities”, along with “political” organizations are exempt from the No Call List rules and cannot be prosecuted for any calls. (Even those subject to the rules are rarely prosecuted). Call your Congressional representatives and ask them to support pending legislation that would remove these legal loopholes and put some real teeth into the rules that the FTC rarely enforces.
Also, there are really good filters that will screen out the large percentage of such calls or wait until a person gets on the line and then produces a really LOUD tone that will make the caller sorry he ever dialed your number.
