Why would it be Assur? You can Daven for anything you want and Hashem always listens. Of course, you’re probably competing against many other people Davening (for both teams) and affecting the game probably comes to Bechirah Chofshis issues (for the players), so it’s probably unlikely that the outcome of the game will be affected by your Teffilos. But the Tefillos never go to waste and HKBH keeps them somewhere for a time when they are needed.

As an aside, I once heard someone joke that the reason the Yankees are historically so good is because they always have the most Jewish and Frum fans so they have a stronger Koack Hat’fillah than any other team.

    Sam2: +1

I’ve davened in a shul once (I won’t say which) that made a Mi She’Beirach on Shabbos for their team to win. LOL

The Talmud in Makkos says ‘the way a person wants to go, he is led’, so to daven for something like this is futile, but so is people who daven to Hashem to succeed in a robbery.

    Hi coreythecup.

    Sam2 said it great.

But I think the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers would have won more World Series if that were the case. lol But I guess that is why they are legendary.

R’ Berel Wein said that without sports, we would have Pogroms in America.

Nothing wrong with following a sport and enjoying the thrill of professional athletes perform.

But Davening for them is a different story.

It kind of cheapens the connection we have with Hashem when you attend a Tehilim rally for some terrible situation, and then you go and ask Hashem to please let the Packers lose the next 4 games so the Bears have a shot at the NFC Central.

Clever: Not at all. It doesn’t cheapen it when a kid asks their father for both an XBOX and a lollipop. HKBH can give us anything, no requests are harder for Him than others. We should ask Him for everything. He loves to hear from us, whether we’re asking for an XBOX or a lollipop.

    Sam2,

Maybe I just see Tefilah as something intimate and powerful and not like the child bugging his father for a candy bar in the grocery store.

Clever: It is both. There are times to Daven like a servant before a king and times like a child before a father. Neither one is ever wrong. Just like there are things you would only ask of a king so too there are things you would only ask of a father. You wouldn’t ask the king for a lollipop, but you would always ask a father for one.

hashem listens to all bakoshos, no matter the flavour;)

just curious what benifits would you attain from davening for a certain sports team to win?- assuming your tefilos are answered of course.

MichaelC – the tefilah to succeed in a robbery is not futile, check the source.

The reason the Yankees are historically so good is because they always have a stronger Koach HaMammon than any other team.

    Tzom = Kol = Mammon = 136.

With the Yankees it is Mammon and not the other two.

K, you can all yell at me, but i’m pointing out that its kind of ironic that mr. more went back to revive a three month old thread by…..mr. corey.

That being said, I think its immature to daven for things that arent really importnant. and if they are that important to you and youre an adult, they shouldnt be. Of course you can, and of course Hashem wil hear it, but is that what you want to show to the Melech Malchei Hamlachim? That youre davening for a team and not for the varios things going on in klal yisroal that really matter?

my 8th grade rebbi once told us a story about a guy who davened that he should find a certain pruste magazine he wanted, and a block later he found one. since then, he said, this guy hasnt touched such a magazine. you can daven for whatever you want…but do you really want it? is it worth your tefilla?

    “is it worth your tefilla?”

You seem to be assuming that using tefilla for sports is a waste of your tefilla usage.

See the Maharsha in Kiddushin 29b who clearly assumes that if you are granted something via tefilla it doesn’t use anything up:

    ?”? ????? ??? ???? ???? ????? ???? ?? ???? ???? ????? ???? ??? ?? ????? ???? ???? ????? ?? ???????? ????? ????? ??”? ????? ??? ???? ?? ??????? ?????? ????? ?? ???? ????? ?????? ?? ????? ???? ?? ???? ?? ??? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????? ???? ????? ?? ???????? ????? ??? ?? ??? ????? ????? ?????? ???? ???? ?????? ??”? ???? ?? ?? ?????? ???? ??’ ???? ????? ????? ??? ??? ???? ?????? ??? ????? ?????? ???? ???? ??? ?? ?????? ?? ??????? ???”?
