L’havdil, there was yet another stampede in Mecca during Hajj, this one killing over 700 pilgrims. In the times of the Bais Hamikdash, there were also massive numbers of people in a small area. Were there ever any similar incidents?

September 25, 2015 4:50 am at 4:50 am #1100904JosephParticipantIn the Bais HaMikdash, miraculously, all the Yidden fit in and were comfortable, even though it wasn’t naturally big enough. And when the Yidden bowed down for the Avoda, miraculously, there was enough space for everyone to bow even though moments earlier there was only enough space for them to stand.
September 25, 2015 5:09 am at 5:09 am #1100905Sam2ParticipantIt’s possible. The Gemara or Mishna never records it.
It’s interesting that these stampedes only happen at the hajj because they all ignore the rules of limits for where people can be and when. Within Nissim Gluyim, we would need (and presumably would have if the Neis stopped) these rules. As long as they were followed, people would be safe.
Joseph: Doesn’t the Gemara say that that was just Bayis Rishon, not Bayis Sheni?
September 25, 2015 5:41 am at 5:41 am #1100906JosephParticipantI’d have to look inside. But it stands to reason that there was population growth in the hundreds of years between bayis rishon and bayis sheini. With a larger population and not a (much) larger bayis, it was still a neis that they all fit in. Perhaps an even bigger neis.
September 25, 2015 6:38 am at 6:38 am #1100907my own kind of jewParticipantJoseph, if you just (implied) that you didn’t know if the miracle (that all Jews visiting the Bayis fit inside comfortably) occurred during the Bayis Sheini (you said you’d have to look inside, implying you didn’t know and needed to double check)
And then you said that “it was still a nes that they all fit in.”
Shouldn’t that be “IF they did all fit in, it would be a bigger nes”
Since you started by implying that you weren’t sure? Perhaps the nes did not occur during the second Bayis.
Or am I just misunderstanding something?

September 25, 2015 2:26 pm at 2:26 pm #1100909The FrumguyParticipantOf course there are the incidents of the Kohanim who used to push to do parts of the Avodah which resulted in deaths, Lo Aleinu.
September 25, 2015 2:56 pm at 2:56 pm #1100910yehudayonaParticipantWait a minute. Most of the Jews didn’t return with Ezra. So how can you say there were more Jews in the Bayis Sheini?
September 25, 2015 4:21 pm at 4:21 pm #1100911Sam2ParticipantThe Frumguy: That didn’t result in deaths. The death came when someone stabbed another Kohen.
