I would like to ask that any ladies/women who have experience learning tznius, either in Bais Yaakov High School or Seminary, to just state the name of the school and what sefer/book was used, if any (or you can just say “taught outside”). Or if you (men or ladies) have any definite knowledge regarding a school, please post it here.

I took a quick look at the preview available for Mrs. Manolson?’s book. Seems very “Hashkafic”, as in reasons why to keep Tznius independent of it being Das Yehudis.
Is that correct?
May 6, 2011 4:54 pm at 4:54 pm #765518Little Sally SaucerMembergavra-yeah they are very hashkafic…but they’re really good cuz she discusses tznius from a secular perspective too (she’s a baalas teshuva) so when your done reading the book u dont feel like you have to do tznius for the men out there, but rather that you have to be tznius for yourself…

The topic of tz’nius was rarely discussed; it was self-understood that we were to be tzanuos.
R’ Dr. A. Twersky writes that a mother imbues her child with a feeling of disgust for that which is repulsive to her- the child observes his mother’s reaction, and this becomes his own reaction unless he consciously attempts to overcome it.
That’s why I like neither mice nor mini-skirts.

That is a fair response (Benchwarmer’s opinion notwithstanding).
You were not taught Tznius as Halacha, but rather as “something nice Jewish girls do” (l’havdil, like nice jewish boys becoming doctors).
This is an “Alter Heim” approach, where the mother used to teach by example, even though the girls knew no “halacha”. Only here, you have the teachers taking the place of the parent.
If I had to guess, I would say you went to a Chassidish school?
May 9, 2011 7:46 pm at 7:46 pm #765523tomim tihyeMemberPopa: I also liked the way the sentence looked without the word “role”.
I also just realized that question marks look like ears.

May 9, 2011 9:29 pm at 9:29 pm #765525Boro Park GirlMemberI went to a school that caters to many types of girls(chassidish, Livish) and we learnt about it from Oz V’Hadar Levusha for a short time and had many workshops and panels on the topic to help us master the halachos and get the proper hashkafos to go along with it.

Is that how you would teach hilchos shabbos also? (There are about 5.)
Are we tzeduki (Sadducee)? Do we only believe in what we can read from the words of the chumash?
May 10, 2011 12:44 am at 12:44 am #765528brotherofursParticipantso far, we haven’t really learned the exact laws, right now it is just obvious what is permitted and we also loook at our teachers as role models. But as we learn chumash and navi in school we go through many lessons and sometimes we talk about tzenius for few classes, ex. when we learned about Devorah and we have very deep discussions
i know my friends in a different high school also learn from daughters of dignity and my sister learned it with a friend too but didn’t like it that much.
May 10, 2011 3:33 am at 3:33 am #765529Gavra…i grew up when tznius was not such an issue as it is today. Our family was very makmid on tznius in so much that when we moved to Boro Park, Mora Dina Rosengarten commented on my way of dress. Yes, i must add that i wore braids till teenage years. We had teachers who were role models and looking at them was enough. Some of the teachers we had were Rebbeim such as Rabbi Godlewsky Z”L, who if noted a girl whose sleeves were rolled up he would comment that perhaps it was warm in the room and the windows need to be opened.Other Rebbeim we had was Rav Avigdor Miller Z”L and Rabbi Gabioff Z”L. I think i don’t need to continue.
Unfortunately today the word of a teacher is not as strong as the salespeople who sometimes convince to purchase clothing that is not fitting.
