Avoda Zora 25b discusses how to travel safely on the road, listing a lot of good detail:
keep non-Jew on your right if you need to fight or he has a sword; walk higher when going up or down and on a side if you end upfront…
tell gangsters that you travelling further than you intend to, so that you can get off the road before they attacked you.

This is not just some random thought, it was apparently part of the yeshiva learning – one story about students of R Akiva, another of R Menashe, student of Rav Yehuda and in both cases, this knowledge is connected to the teachers.

Driving on the road – where you are surrounded by a lot of people you can’t control, possible listim and genavim, – is a perfect modern analogy…
I am not even talking about driving carefully yourself, this is peshita, but about defensive driving similar to defensive walking discussed in the gemora.
Maybe – choose time and route where you driving is safer; do not stay in someone’s blind spot; get out of the way when someone is speeding behind you.

Given the gemora precedent, anyone heard this taught in their yeshiva? Or BY? Any written materials that schools could use?

All things are random thoughts as it’s simple advice and knowledge stop putting knowledge and wisdom and truth on a pedestal. As it has a fair playing field whoever said this was smart and wise but it was a person.

I mean if it wasn’t a talmudicnfigure saying it and it was someone else would you even care?. You’d say oh that’s really deep smart and cool and maybe youd use it but you’d look at it like ahything else in a life q very wise wisdom from some random author. Please stop making humans into avodah zarah

    “keep non-Jew on your right”

That’s why I always drive in the left lane.

This is all basic situational awareness and self defense training. Not karate but mostly situational awareness. Obviously the police are not there to stop crime. They are there to I imitate bad guys not to commit crime. But where the government encourages crime and does not prosecute – eg New York and California – the police don’t even perform that role.

I was raised Jewish but not fully Torah observant and became fully Torah observant but I recall there is a Gemara that says a father is obligated to teach his son a trade and how to swim which is to become self supportive and situationally aware and the skills to execute. It seems to me in the absence of an effective police force we each should take some self defense courses – not karate but to learn situational awareness and vehicle defense.

ujm > That’s why I always drive in the left lane.

Here we go, an idea! To be precise, gemorah says on the right if there will be a fist fight or he has a sword – sword hangs on the left and picked up with the right hand, so you can catch him in the act with your right. BUT if he has a stick – that he has on his right, then you should be on the left to have a chance.

Same with driving – on a undivided highway, I would stick to the right to avoid incoming traffic that is deadlier than same direction.

Of course, gemorah does not have to mention that we should not be gazlanim ourselves, but we have to say it here … if your driving on the left either creates danger due to your own speed or due to you impeding those who drive fast, then you should not.

but, bottom line – this was studied in yeshivos 2000 years ago. Is it studied in yours?

“if your driving on the left either creates danger due to your own speed or due to you impeding those who drive fast, then you should not.”

You’re worried I’m in the left either driving too fast… or driving too slow? I’m driving neither too fast nor too slow; driving just right. Faster than the right but within the limits.

You yourself started a thread quoting “the Bible” about man created in gods image etc….. whatever ….

Everything you just said should be thrown back on that thread.

    Always_Ask_Questions,

“Given the gemora precedent, anyone heard this taught in their yeshiva? Or BY? Any written materials that schools could use?”

There’s an empty slot on the bookshelf in the beis medrash just waiting for your sefer on this! You can call it (and maybe it’ll become your new CR username) נהג בזהירות
