Could I pitch a tent there and walk to a yeshiva and study?

PBA: What I mean is there’s alot of controversy regarding the issue of homeless people living in tents committing crimes in Lakewood. Unfortunately the police are not doing anything about it and it is very scary and unpleasant for the frum families who live nearby.

    See my post under “Haircuts”.

its really a terrible thing to let it stay there becasue there are children in lakewood who are scared to leave their houses when its dark cuz the members of this tent city walk around parts of lakewood at night and many times they are drunk/wild.

I hoope the community and government can settle this problem quickly becasue its coming out to look like a scandal against the frum yidden that thye dont care about the homeless. Maybe we can get them to move to zuccotti park????? it was safer for us when the homeless camped out there!

The Israelites were homeless for 40 years!

What is a “tent city”? Has someone started “Occupy Lakewood”? What are their demands?

GAW – It’s where the homeless here live. They live in tents. They haven’t invented Shelters for them here in this County like they have in NYC.

So, why are tents unreasonable (as long as there is heat, electric & running water)? Doesn’t sound much different than a FEMA trailer.

I wouldn’t want to live near “tent city”. This is beyond disgusting. How can a person let their kids play outside when the vagrants are out and about. Maybe something drastic has to be done.

Would you mind explaining yourself? Why would people who live in tents be “Vagrants”? Would you say the same about people who live in caravans?

those who live in caravans would probably best be described as migrants.

who lives in caravans? I wouldn’t want my kids to play outside near people who drink and take drugs. These people are unpredictable with their actions. Why can’t they move the tent city resident’s to a shelter. During the cold weather they are burning fires to keep themselves warm, yet the fires can spread thru the neighborhood with the winds. Shelters have heat. I think that we are too passive and this is a crisis that needs to be dealt with.

Ahhh, Ehhh, because there isn’t one. Lakewood, nor Ocean county have shelters for homeless people. The township had thousands of dollars to pay their lawyer to try to evict them from tent city, but they have “No” money for a shelter. If you and the other residents are so concerned let these people live in your basement free of charge. I’m sure most residents of tent city will agree to this deal.

I think that the concern Lakewood people have is not that these people do not have where to go, only that they are in their back yard..

I wouldn’t want the homeless living in my basement or my neighbors. Maybe we need to do something drastic to protect our children. We are too smart to become victims.

So for all those that think they know it all let me give you a little background as to what is really going on. yes lakewood does not have a shelter for them but they were offered a shelter in Toms River now the reason they dont want to stay there – and these are in the words of the homeless- is because in the shelters they need to follow rules and cant have drugs.

it started of with a handful of ppl and has grown a crazy amount because the word got out there in the homeless world of this great place to pitch a tent – and to gavra at work no these are not tents with water and heat they are blue tarps and plastic bags- and live in a quiet nice place where no one bothers you. something has to be done! every morning week wake up to hear another story that happened in that place.

we are waiting for a forest fire to burn down lakewood and then maybe someone will do something.

Actually I think you need to know what’s really going on. There is no Public shelter anywhere in Ocean County for adults and this includes Toms River. Because of your post I actually did a search on the net and the HUD website only lists one single shelter in Ocean County for adults in Southern Ocean County (Waretown) which isn’t Gov. owned. The statement attributed above was because some guy asked s/o in tent city that was high on drugs and that’s what he answered.

The real answer is there is No Gov. shelter!

The local Gov. has tons of our money (property taxes) to send illegals here in Lakewood to public school, but they don’t have any money for a shelter. In spite of Yalmulkas on their heads the Lakewood Gov. doesn’t represent me or my views which are based on Torah.

Wake up & smell the coffee!

Homelessness is a terrible problem that the people who live in warm houses nearby must struggle with terribly.

Actually in the Public Meeting about the Tent City one person after another expressed concern with the plight of the homeless.

However the solution is not for a “Tent City” to be put up right near families with little children.

Not when people in the Tent City are not just homeless many of them are not mentally stable and the problems from the residents of the “Tet City” are quite dangerous.

Noone put them there. They live in the woods because they don’t have anywhere else to live.

“Not when people in the Tent City are not just homeless many of them are not mentally stable and the problems from the residents of the “Tet City” are quite dangerous.”

This is your bias speaking. Yes, mentally ill people can be homeless and they can also be living in a home. Homeless people can be mentally ill and they can also be mentally normal.

One thing has nothing to do with the other.

The solution is for the County and/or township Gov. to build/buy a least one shelter. I give them permission, if they claim they have no money, to stop providing schooling to illegal immigrants and their kids and use this money towards a shelter!

    sounds like the “occupy movement”.

I wonder how the township committee members would feel if people pitched tents on the sidewalk in front of their home.

As charedim take over the regins of some municipalities in the US (and Israel), you have to realize you are the leaders of everyone not just those in your community.

That means dealing with issues that involve everyone like Homlessness, Public Schools, Police , Fire , Libaries, Street repair (Imagine a huge pothole or sinkhole in the main thoroughfare that needs to be fixed now or presents a great danger). Snow plows etc

Either accept these reposibilies or dont hold these offices. You cannot kick the issues to other communities who might not want these issues either

This line of yours I agree with to the Nth degree.

We have to remember we are still in Golus. Golus is in Yerushalyim and in Bnei Brak. And it’s even in Lakewood, NJ.

E/o here keeps screaming to the Frum local Gov. that there is a problem, but they don’t want to listen to the only Mentchlich solution which I have already mentioned.
