All my israeli friends have told me to read it when it comes out it english, well it’s out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thoughts anyone?
Got to go, I’ll write mine later.
January 20, 2014 2:47 pm at 2:47 pm #1016653Shopping613 🌠ParticipantSo it reminded me of Graceling and Fire, both non-jewish books.
This actually was a non-jewish type book that was Torah oriented and had no romance. Something fantasy that could happen, with kingdoms, traitors, and kigs, and yes, people died.
Unlike a jewish book Iv’e ever seen!!!!!!
Why do writers think all we want to read about is problems, connections and shidduchim, its interesting, but every single book needs to be on it!
If you are reading non-jewish books since the jewish book scene right now is in shambles, I advise you to buy these books IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!! i’M IN MIDDLE OF THE SECOND SO DON’T SPOIL IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look them up online….they are the best!!!! The orginal titles are: Isterak, and Amahallel, (names of certain characters) it sounds better in hebrew, don’t you agree? But oh well, at least the book is the same!
January 20, 2014 4:02 pm at 4:02 pm #1016655golferParticipantSyag, what happened to your comment?
Disappeared into thin air…
Hope you haven’t disappeared, Syag.
January 20, 2014 4:33 pm at 4:33 pm #1016656🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantsomeone informed me that although her post seems to indicate to an outsider that it is NOT a jewish written book,it in fact is published by artscroll. I am just very sensitive to jewish author bashing from the view point of it being a halachik issue and responded to that.
you obviously knew that and hence asked. . .
glad I could entertain.
January 20, 2014 5:35 pm at 5:35 pm #1016657notasheepMemberShopping, I will tell you that I loved both of them, which is rare for me since I was brought up reading very good classic and modern fiction, and so I sometimes find Jewish fiction a little cliched or poorly written. I think that The Betrayal and The Outcast are both fantastic, and I’m sure there will be a third so waiting patiently…
January 20, 2014 5:40 pm at 5:40 pm #1016658golferParticipantHi Syag.
Glad you did not disappear.
No, I didn’t know that. (What made you think it was obvious?)
Guilty as charged though, of skimming without reading comprehension.
I like threads about books and they don’t appear as often as, for example, threads about shidduchim or food.
I noticed your post and as I wanted to come back to it and figure out what was going on, your post was gone!
Much ado about nothing, I guess, as a non-Jewish writer once said.
January 20, 2014 6:00 pm at 6:00 pm #1016659🍫Syag LchochmaParticipantgolfer – Thank you for explaining. that was the second post in a couple hours that seemed to be sarcastic digs at me so I was feeling very paranoid. I obviously put my foot in my mouth with that post and figured you were enjoying the comedy 🙂
I am a true book addict and would LOVE more threads about books but we have never had a thread that didn’t include sweeping comments about the quality of *all* Jewish books, as if the posters have read them all, and are so above them all as to speak so freely. Truly though, I am sure I was taught that bad mouthing jewish authors (as is the case with kosher restaurants) can be a very big problem of lashon horah (with or without motzei shem rah, depending on the author). It is for that reason that I either avoid book threads, avoid posting on them or just cringe til they disappear.
Wish I could hear more about the books you like . . .
January 20, 2014 7:11 pm at 7:11 pm #1016660golferParticipantSyag, I agree with you on the subject of Jewish authors.
As for books I like to read, most are not Jewish books so perhaps I should leave it at that.
For a Jewish author whose books are moving, well-written, and not typical, try Haim Sabato.
I have higher expectations from Jewish books, and don’t approve when Jewish authors fictionalize and dramatize events in our history that should not be trivialized. For a Holocaust narrative that won’t offend, try “Someday We’ll be Free”. The author is Sanik.
January 20, 2014 9:00 pm at 9:00 pm #1016661writersoulParticipantSeconding and thirding (on behalf of my dad) Haim Sabato’s books. They’re available in Hebrew and English. I’d say definitely not typical in structure or plot and incredibly moving and sweet.
I hesitate to say anything about other Jewish literature except that those books that I’ve read (naming no names) haven’t impressed me like Sabato’s have.
January 22, 2014 1:34 pm at 1:34 pm #1016662Shopping613 🌠ParticipantYes there is a third, I can’t wait!!!!
It is very bashing to certain types of jews, but a well written book I must say.
I’ll have to tell you about the third when it comes out first in hebrew……
January 22, 2014 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm #1016663Shopping613 🌠ParticipantOh, and I finished the second, IT WAS SOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!
January 22, 2014 2:00 pm at 2:00 pm #1016664notasheepMemberWhen is the third out? Cause the English one of the Outcast only came out Succos…
January 25, 2014 3:57 pm at 3:57 pm #1016665Shopping613 🌠ParticipantIt’s not out in hebrew yet, it’s written by an israeli.
Seeing I’m in Israel, I’ll know when the hebrew version comes out and be sure to tell you.
January 26, 2014 10:00 am at 10:00 am #1016666notasheepMemberI know the original is Ivrit, that’s why I like it so much, she is such a good writer and the English translation is very well done, no pretentious language that even I need a dictionary to understand, which is what I always like.
So what did you think? My only gripe is that there is no mention of either Lady Makan or Hala expecting and then suddenly they both have babies. A bit too much of avoiding the topic – it is an adult novel after all. She could have written that they were expecting. Apart from that it was fantastic.
January 26, 2014 2:34 pm at 2:34 pm #1016667Shopping613 🌠ParticipantSuddenly the second book talked about the black powder, in the prologue it seemed like it was mentioned in the first book, but I can’t remember…..
January 26, 2014 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm #1016668notasheepMemberNo, Sanpal died in the ambush at Batar ravine, which happened in the first book, but I don’t think the gunpowder was mentioned. New plot lines are ok, why would we have heard about the powder before? But for a character who is present in the storyline to suddenly have a baby, without any clues or hints that it is going to happen at some point is just odd. And it happens twice? But like I said, that’s my only issue.
Please be more sensitive when giving away information from books by putting an alert of some kind before doing so. Thanks – 29
January 26, 2014 10:06 pm at 10:06 pm #1016669notasheepMemberSorry, 29! Can’t we have some sort of code in the site where spoilers are invisible unless the cursor hovers over it?
You’re clear now. We put a warning in the title 🙂 – 29
January 26, 2014 11:44 pm at 11:44 pm #1016670the-art-of-moiParticipantThe Betrayal and The Outcast are such good books! I really hope the author plans to release more books in English.
January 27, 2014 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm #1016671notasheepMemberTAOM – there will definitely be a third so don’t worry!
January 27, 2014 2:46 pm at 2:46 pm #1016672Shopping613 🌠ParticipantNow I remember…..that’s where he died…..
Life makes sense again! 😉
January 27, 2014 8:49 pm at 8:49 pm #1016673notasheepMemberYou make it sound so simple for how life can make sense…
January 27, 2014 11:11 pm at 11:11 pm #1016674the-art-of-moiParticipantnotasheep-
Yay! Do you know when?
January 28, 2014 7:04 pm at 7:04 pm #1016675notasheepMemberNo idea! The Outcast only came out in English about four months ago so it’s not likely to be for at least a year
January 29, 2014 12:01 am at 12:01 am #1016676the-art-of-moiParticipant<quiet sob behind a napkin>
May 26, 2014 11:17 am at 11:17 am #1016677Shopping613 🌠ParticipantShe release a new book in hebrew on robots, dunno when, passed it in the bookstore.
I only understood the word robot, real high level hebrew, I don’t know if it will be translated, it is about the future, which is the first time i saw a jewish book written in hebrew on that by someone frum….it’s about time!
