At the Seder we all recite the famous story of Rabi Elazar Ben Azariah and Rabi Akiva and Rabi Tarfon et al, when their Seder in Bnei Brak only finalized when their Talmidim came to tell them it is time for Krias Shema shel Shachris. Wow! We all know how important it is to recite Magid retelling Yetzias Metzrayim at the Seder table.

In this honor, we today hereby inaugurate the First Annual CR Longest Seder Contest. We will all post on Chal HaMoed how late our Seder ended. And the Gold, Silver and Bronze CR Seder medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners respectively.

Good luck on finishing the latest! May the best story tellers win!

We end between 12 and 1 as the elderly members of our Seder can’t go much later than that. A late Seder for the sake of having a late Seder would defeat the purpose. Judaism is not a religion of competition. There is no need to be better than anyone else, certainly when “better” is determined by something as subjective as who takes longer to talk, read, and eat a meal. It’s possible for some to have a more meaningful Seder in two hours than others have in 6. And it will almost definitely be more meaningful if the goal of that 6-hour Seder is solely for the sake of saying, “My Seder lasted 6 hours.”

Oh, and, needless to say, I will not compete.

i read somewhere that a certain Rebbe likes to act out the story of yetzias metzrayim and so many bochurim volunteer to sift throught tons of sand the entire night before the seder to check for any chametz in the sand before they spread it over the shul floor. crazy or what?!

I would dare posit that it’s the ‘tochen’ that counts. These great men were totally into it – at their level – a whole night.

This is the night of chinuch, tradition. Parents to children, Rabbis to pupils. What we put in, stays. Every minute counts. HaShem attached such an importance and significance to these mitzvhos. Indeed, this is Toldos Am Yisroel, our emergence as Yidden. Lets all try to give it our very best, to come out of it as a better Yid.

    Chacham: I will not complete

I know how badly you wanna win, but still, you are mechuyiv to say Krias Shema shel Shachris. So you will have to complete by that time. You can’t just keep your Seder going on forever…

But I do commend you for having the right spirit!

Ours usually end somewhere between 3 and 5 am. No exaggeration here. If we ever end at 1 or 2, that’s considered early! Once, one of my daughters and I actually watched sunrise right after we finished our seder.

I’ll let you know how late this year’s sedarim will be. See you on chol hamoed.

    Well, my family ends late!

It’s so amazing to hear the birds chirping in the wee hours of the morning. First it gets really dark. As the Seder goes on, night goes on, too. Soon enough we start to see the sun peeking out of the darkness. The moon begins to fade away giving way to the brilliance of the sun. It beautifully enhances and concludes our Seder!

Not only are we remembering a Nes that happened to us many years ago and reliving it, but we are also experiencing a daily Nes that we don’t always get to see. Mah Rabu Maasecha Ha-Shem!

We usually make a minyan for Sefira towards the end of the second Seder, and finish about 2:30 AM.

I have tremendous respect for the Remo:- hoRav Moshe Isserles ZTKLLH’H, and he holds that one should even have the 4th Kos prior to Chatzos haLailoh, so my ambition is to comply with the Pesak of the Remo.

Our first one ended really early – around 1:30!!!! That’s because we were all exhausted from a CRAZY DAY of plumbing problems, unexpected last minute out of town guests, broken jars of freshly made chrain, etc etc.

Our second seder, however ended close to 4:00. Now that’s more like it! But Yummy did her usual shtick of ending her seder before the rest of us and hit the sack by 12:30ish. She’s not a late night person.

Here in Hawaii we finished at 4:30am. So that’s 9:30am NY time, and 4pm Israel time so we beat all of you 😉

We were going to end on time, but then the Maharal came and announced that there was a mistake in the clock, and that it was really yesterday. So we had to keep on going.

You probably beat us all in Hawaii, as according to Rav Tuchinsky’s Shita, we assume you had the 1st Seder this past Thursday nite, and your 2nd Seder, this past Friday nite.

I finished the seder at 12:30 and then read through midrashim about yetzias mitzrayim until chatzos (1:30) to fulfill “kol hamarbeh lisaper”. I think that according to the shitah that the korbon pesach/afikoman can only be eaten until chatzos so too the mitzvah of sippur only goes until then (???? ??? ???…..) I was somech on this shitah and went to sleep afterwards in order to have energy to spend the next day learning.

We finished approx 2:15 first night and 2:30 second night (par for the course; one year we randomly finished around 4, but usually we try not to go past 2:30)

I have a friend here who told me his family’s seder started half an hour late because one of the tables collapsed. He said bottles of wine broke and one seder plate went flying.

Finished around 2:20, and walked in the front door at home at 3. by far the longest (and coincidentally the most meaningful) seder we’ve been to since we made aliyah.
