It’s impossible for me to do him any kind of justice in the CR; in one line, he was a true eved Hashem. Read the biography on him for a more complete picture.
He was caught, arrested, and inscripted into the Russian army. He was sent pages of a Gemora, and spent his days on those. He was told one Shabbos, that he must do target practice. So he held the gun upside-down, and shot. Amazingly, on the first try he got the bulls eye. I believe he was forced to run the _____ where soldiers line up from both sides, and beat mercilessly with clubs, while you run through. People died running it.
He was forced to do guard duty, on Shabbos. There was one heavy winter coat that the guard used. One Shabbos, when he arrived the first guard left the coat hanging on the tree. Since one may not remove an object from a tree on Shabbos, he kept on pushing off removing the coat, until it would become pikuach nefesh, in freezing Russian winter. He never removed it.
Once he did make it into Poland, he eventually became a Rosh Yeshiva in a Novardiker Yeshiva, at a young age.
This is not even nearing the surface of who the Steipler was, and what he has achieved for us.
the steipler goan lived very poorly. his talmidim tried convincing him to put a lock on his door for safety purposes but he refused saying it was a luxury!
well they went to his wife and she agreed. a few days later his wife lost the key and they were locked out of the house!
the steipler told his talmidim that this is a great example of marbeh nechosim marbeh dageh!! its amazing how for him this was a luxury!
tbt: The Steipler himself would probably want anything written about him to focus more on his Torah than the stories. Also, I think the seats were safek d’oraisa because if it was shatnez d’rabbanan he wouldnt have to get up for a safek. (I’ve heard from a shatnez tester that to this day the FSU is the only place in the world where shatnez d’oraisa is still common.)
IS: I think that sitting on actual shatnez is d’rabbonnon. He was probably not mechuav to get up, but he did, despite his tiredness. About the FSU, a shatnez checker showed me a army hat (like a NY police hat) that had a sheet of linen through the top.

as a young boy the steipler gave up his bed to someone and stayed in shul the entire night!
closer to dawn he went to slp on a bench and as the mispallelim came in not noticing him sleeping there they dumped his coats onto him!

I just checked the book “the Steipler” page 53. He was not punished.

They hired a guide, who came with his daughter.. The proposed guide was a woman, & the Steipler refused to set out page 63

One of my Rebbeim once brought a kvittel from his wife to the Steipler. The Steipler glanced at it and pushed it away saying “ksav isha”. So this Rebbe rewrote it in his own handwriting and presented it again. This time “nusach isha”
After he wrote it in his own words the Steipler finally read it.
I heard this story first hand.
I was told of a certain yeshivah that worked with OTD bochurim that would bring them to the Steipler. They would line up the ones that wore tzitzis in front of the ones that didn’t but they said the Steipler always knew.
I heard of a certain wife who shares a husband in common with my own wife who told me first hand that she sat in the Steipler’s chair when she came back from visiting Rav Chaim’s Rebbetzin. If you are a girl you should go to.
The holy Steipler was a Chasidic Jew. As much as the yeshivisher world thinks he was litvish, he was born through a bracha from Reb Motel of Hornisteipel. He wore a gartel under his long jacket. He went to Mikva very often, even on Shabbos. He was very humble and would stand up for anyone who he knew was a Hornisteipler einikel. On Shabbos, he would only go to a cold mikva. His son, Reb Chaim shelita reports going with him, and turning around since the mikva had been warmed.
is their a halachic difference between a cold mikvah and a hot mikvah on shabbos?
shlishi: According to several Poskim, yes. ( For men) It’s some chasidim who are meikal, which the previous poster may have thought the Steipler was included.
