Sports. I actually killed a guy the other day, because he was talking about sports which is one of the gimmel chamuros

    Materialism.

Computers – I didn’t know this until recently. Thank you YWN!

Everyone should list the things that are Avodah Zara that others might not know about, so that we can judge people accordingly.

ben: A cross is Avodah Zarah no matter where it is. Sort of. No one is actually worshipping the chess piece or the Red Cross symbol or the Swiss flag, but it’s based off Avodah Zarah. Then again, so is Hello Kitty, so there’s no difference between your example and mine.

    Sorcery in Harry Potter.

@Sam2 – Is it fair to deduce that Hello Kitty is avodah zarah because she resembles actual Japanese idols?

    #1094525

Harry Potter is definitely avodah zara. That was a good one.

What about Kipling backpacks? Is there a consensus on that?

Coffee is avodah zara. Any backpack that costs more than $25 is avodah zara, unless it’s guaranteed for life by Land’s End or similar.

But aren’t those backpacks that are guaranteed for life conclusive evidence of intent to commit fraud?

Bookworm: Look it up. It is actually based on a Chinese idol.

In fact, I knew someone in a secular college whose roommate actually worshipped the Hello Kitty idol. It had a ritual for good luck and everything.

@Sam2 – Whoa, no kidding. :O I thought it was Japanese, considering that Sanrio (the company that sells Kitty’s merchandise) is from Japan. And I’m pretty sure I’ve seen similar figurines that I believe were brought to America from Japan; I wasn’t sure if they were idols or simply cute little toys. *shivers*

    Money

Why is the economy so bad today? Why is the whole world going down? For the past thousands of years there was always Avoda zara in the world-from the molech to the baal to the asheira tree etc…-todays avoda zara is MONEY, we are a servant to money, we serve money, we bow down to money, we let money talk & rule us. Thus we leave Hashem no choice but to take it away from us Rachmana L’tzlan. But you can still save yourself from going down. if a person can use his money the right way & remember that it all comes from Hashem & it was just loaned to him (even though he worked for it), then he is the perfect person to continue holding Hashem’s money.

Bookworm: There’s actually a Chinese restaurant in E”Y (with a Badatz Hechsher) that has the idol displayed in it. People just don’t know.

Tai Chi is Avodah Zarah. Most martial arts are based in Avodah Zarah though the forms of them left today are just artistic and combat moves and thus are probably not Assur.

    Yoga is Avodah Zarah.

yungermanS: That’s a nice rant, though obviously meaningless L’ma’aseh. You should add to it that the Gematria of Dollar (Dalet Vav Lamed Reish)=240=Amalek.

@Sam2 – Also in E”Y, you can get tons of Hello Kitty merchandise for children, like yomanim and backpacks…. Considering that HK’s distant relative is actively worshiped, this may very well be a serious issue. Out of curiosity, do you have reason to think that other Sanrio characters, like Melody, a rabbit, and Keropi, a frog, may be idols, too?

Who is the one that is ready to be an Employer? Why should someone be chosen to be an employer more then a employee? The one that his money & business won’t effect his relationship with Hashem i.e. he is still going to daven in a minyan every day & have a learning ??? every day. While an employee only works from 9:00AM to 5:00PM this time of work is his fence between him & Hashem telling him its time to go Daven & learn. But the person that realizes this does not need this fence as a reminder to go daven & learn. Hashem sees he gives ???? he Davens & learns everyday why shouldn’t he be a multi millionaire he knows how to spend it right & appreciates that Hashem picked him to be an employer more then an employee. Why don’t jews run the biggest businesses in the world? Because if we do it will effect the relationship between him & Hashem (he will forget to daven & not be ???? ??? etc…) while on the other hand the phone company of IDT is owned by a jew by the name of Howard Jonas. Why is he the owner of such a big company? Why did Hashem pick him? Hashem saw in the future that this man has the potential to be rich & not forget Hashem that put him in this position & still do his ???? (Howard Jonas even has a book he made, the name is I’M NOT THE BOSS.)

It is really annoying when comments are approved, commented about and then deleted! How are you supposed to follow a thread if it’s full of holes? If it’s approvable, approve it and keep it there. If not, don’t approve it in the first place.

Bookwoem: I am not holding in the company or its products. I saw in a book once that Hello Kitty was based off an idol. That set off alarm bells in my mind so I did research into Hello Kitty. I do not recall seeing anything about other characters, but I really wasn’t looking for that at all.

Did that same book say it was Chinese?

Maybe (according to Wikipedia, unsourced) it’s based on a Japanese “good luck charm” (not idol) called maneki-neko (which is also popular in China), but it’s just a fictional character based on a design used originally as a decoration on merchandise such as coin purses.

“Why don’t jews run the biggest businesses in the world?”

the slight problem with your theory is that Jews make up a very large percentage of CEOs in Fortune 500 companies. Steve Ballmer (until recently), Larry Ellison, Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Mark Zuckerberg are just some examples of many Jewish CEOs. Jews have run the biggest bank in the world – the Federal Reserve, for decades.

@Sam2 – Okay. Thanks for the heads-up anyways about Hello Kitty!

@DaasYochid – That explains why the first product with Hello Kitty on it was a coin purse….

I think I’ll discuss this topic with my rabbi. 🙂

I’ve seen quite a few variations of them including fauxhawks with kippahs. As far as the dreadlocks, I have seen a few of them. If I could post a picture of what I mean I would. Isn’t there something in the gemara about the mohawks? You are all far more knowledgeable than me. I’m curious to know if its really in there. I know that dreadlocks are definately used in avodah zara.

Copied from the “scary for kids” website:

According to the legend, Hello Kitty was created back in the 1970s by a Chinese woman. Apparently, her 14-year old daughter was disagnosed with cancer of the mouth. The doctors told the mother that her child was terminally ill and there was nothing they could do for her.

When her daughter recovered from her cancer, the mother kept her promise to the devil. She created Hello Kitty.

The designers created Hello Kitty without a mouth because they wanted make her emotions ambiguous. The blank expression means that you can project your own emotions onto the cartoon. If you are sad, then Hello Kitty looks sad. If you are happy, then Hello Kitty looks happy. Hello Kitty will seem to feel whatever emotion you are feeling.

So, the truth is that Hello Kitty is not associated with satanic rituals or devil worship at all.

I was once by a neighbors front door and my eyes happened to wander up above her door. I saw sitting there this Chinese omen segilah thingy its an octagon shape with a little mirror in the center. I immediately informed her what it was about and she took it off. must have been left by the previous tenant

Ivdu: I didn’t claim it was Satan worship. It’s based off a Japanese (thanks for the correction, I read the book a long time ago) Avodah Zarah.

From the pop cult magazine website:

Does it relate to any other Japanese cultural icons?

So far as we know, she was invented pure and simple. Her original designer, however, took inspiration from the cats in Through the Looking Glass. Some say she also looks disturbingly like Miffy, a two-dimensional long-earned rabbit that lives on tissue packets and lunch boxes. More broadly, she was designed during an era when animals were all the rage with kids: Snoopy, Mickey, Lassie, unicorns, and giraffes, whatever.

    How was it created?

I don’t know where you read that it’s azodah zara, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be

Wikipedia about Hello Kitty, under background:

“There has been some suggestion[by whom?] that Hello Kitty has its origins in Maneki Neko, and that the name Hello Kitty itself is a back-translation of Maneki Neko, which means beckoning cat in English.”

    Wikipedia of Maneki Neko:

Maneki-neko come in different colors, styles, and degrees of ornateness. Common colors are white, black, gold and sometimes red. In addition to ceramic figurines, maneki-neko can be found as keychains, piggy banks, air fresheners, house-plant pots, and miscellaneous ornaments, as well as large statues. Maneki-neko are sometimes called the “Chinese lucky cat”, as it is also increasingly popular among Chinese merchants.”

    Read the origins there also.

I will try and find my source again that claimed positively that Hello Kitty came from Maneki Neko. If you see the pictures, though, the cats are clearly being depicted in the same position.
