A friend on FB the other day posted something about “who remembers when you had to walk to the TV to change the channel?” I asked her why she was asking, and she said she worked with a bunch of 20-somethings who had no idea TV used to be like that.

Merriam-Websters defines a girls as “a female child from birth to adulthood.” I recall you objecting to the modern usage of the word gender, even though the dictionary lists it as an acceptable usage.

I remember being able to walk to the local grocery store at age six and a half together with my five year old sister (crossing one little corner that was not heavily trafficked), to pick up a loaf of bread and a container of milk. In those days people could actually do that and not fear for their children’s safety. We were sent outdoors to play ALL DAY LONG, only coming in for lunch or bathroom breaks (and in those days we could go a long, long, time without needing the latter – halevai the same were true today).

Rotary phones on a short cord, no voice mail (it just rang and rang), black and white TV, 13 channels for VHF and 50something? for UHF (or maybe the other way around), record player in a huge cabinet to play 16/33/45/78s, no AC, library books with a card in a pocket that got stamped with a due date, library cards with your name typed on it, running around the neighborhood and in and out of friends’ houses for hours, hearing the bell that meant YOU had to go home, bathtub with feet and no shower head, putting a bag of ice on the thermometer in our 3rd floor apt. of an 1800s house because we were freezing, listening to the radio for school closings, paying cash for everything and when you ran out having to go to the bank between 9-3 to withdraw more with your passport book, paying a penny for a piece of candy, a dime for a phone call from a booth on the corner, having to ask for unleaded regular instead of leaded regular gas…
In Jr. High I played on my mom’s work computer when she worked as a secretary, although she still use a typewriter and correction fluid. I first used a computer in college, on an Apple IIe with two 5.25″ disks (one for the program). Dot matrix printers, form feed paper, form feed paper jamming and having to start your print job over from the beginning and wasting all that paper. Buying hard tickets for a concert that were kept in a drawer, one complete set for each performance.

The computer room was always air conditioned I remember one summer day the a/c in the office was out & we all moved in to the commuter room because that was on an independent system

i still like colored stencis, you were able to give out colored sheets for the same price, today all sheets are black and white because they are photocpied. Teachers still use delaney books. Banks open after 3 what a shock, we all catered to bankers hours instead of the other way around.
