    Yaakov Avinu wanted to reside in peace without worries and the tzaros of Yosef fell on him. The question is why Hashem does not want a tzadik to have both olam hazeh, this world and olam habo, the next world?
    The Chanukas Hatorah from Rebbi Reb Heshel and the Ksav Sofer say the same thing. The tzadik by worrying that he might not get olam habo constantly improves himself and gains it but since his life is a worry, he loses thereby olam hazeh. whereas the rasha is the opposite. He is sure he has olam habo or does not believe in it, does not worry about it and thereby loses it and gains olam hazeh. Yaakov Avinu became sure he has olam habo and thereby gain olam hazeh but a tzadik constantly must improve himself so his life must constantly be a worry. By worrying about Yosef’s life he was forced to worry about olam habo and thereby lose alom hazeh because when one his sons does not live he will not get olam habo.

    The Chasam Sofer says that a tzadik can improve himself differently. It says סור מרע ועשה טוב turn away from bad and do good, how? בקש שלום ורדפהו, look for peace and pursue it. How do we pursue it? The guf and neshama are constantly in conflict, so we would like to make peace between them. We will create a small conflict having the neshama do something small that the guf does not like and then allow the guf to get used to it. Once it gets used to it, we have peace. Now, continue the method. Having to work this technique diminishes olam hazeh but a tzadik must continue to improve oneself and thereby one gains olam habo. Yaakov Avinu wanted to stop following this method so he had to worry about gaining olam habo through the tzaros of Yosef as above.
