I’m a BT getting married this fall and I need your help. I don’t know what kind of music to play at the wedding! I don’t know the first thing about traditional Jewish music. If anyone can recommend any specific songs or artists that would be amazing. My Kallah and I would definitely prefer something in the klezmer direction as opposed to singer+synth genre. If anyone recommends any NYC-based DJs, we’re all ears. Thank you!

I was at a wedding last year, where a popular singer/one-man-band actually kept the music contemporary YET: the decibel level was so pleasant. No one had to go home half-deaf,and totally hoarse. Totally lively, without the insanity! I hesitate to mention names, because someone may feel otherwise, so just “shop around” by word of mouth, and mazel tov!!

We hired a klezmer band rather than a contemporary band, and they kept the level reasonable. Everyone loved it. Good luck!

I would recomend either DJ Yitzie Wadiche or DJ Isaac Jemal. they are both amazing dj’s.

Not to jinx your plans (Mazel Tov, btw!) but has anyone seen Tim Hawkins’s video about what songs NOT to play at a wedding? (He’s a goy, but his comedy skits are clean.) The video might bring a smile to your face if you’re getting overwhelmed by planning. 🙂

There it lots of classic Jewish stuff, if you go to a music shop have a look at any of the albums that have wedding medleys, they should give you some idea.

Hint: however much it sounds upbeat and jazzy, you do NOT want ‘zochreni noh’ played at your wedding. I don’t know why people do. It’s about Shimshon, when he is praying to Hashem to help him crush the Philistines, when he is chained up in their captivity. Not a wedding theme.

@notasheep – I’ll make note of that, as it’d be great for a Jewish version of the Inappropriate Wedding Songs skit. 🙂
