I don’t live there, but I have Mishpacha there, and it is a beautiful, warm community. Durting the Hurricane, it was one of the few communities that was NOT affected adversely by the storm surge. Nice people, wonderful rabbis, good community.

Note to all grammarians and typographologists: When I originally wrote my post I had italicized several phrases within the bolded section to have an emphasis within an emphasis, so I used the plural “emphases”. Later I decided that it didn’t look good like that so I edited the post and removed the italics, leaving only one emphasis. But I forgot to change “emphases” to “emphasis”.

The real answer is No there is not a Yeshivish community there, its a more modern community like Teaneck or the 5 towns (Just not as wealthy as the 5 towns)

    PaturAvA,

    Thank you for your post.

Just when I decided the CR was a waste of time…

The words of the Igros Moshe are beautiful beyond belief-

-the precision, the wisdom, and the many nuances (most of which I’m sure are totally beyond my understanding).

I think it should be required reading by the wise & esteemed members of the CR before attempting to comment on:

-matters of internal divisions in our ranks,

    -matters of Halacha & Hashkafa,

-matters regarding the medina (note all ye would-be “Zionists”- Rav Moshe ZTZ”L does in fact refer to them as “reshaim”).

-matters designated by Rav Moshe as “Politika”

-and just stamm the usual nonsense (besides recipes- those are fair game even for the ignorant Balabusta who only picks up an Igros Moshe when she’s dusting).

As for the waste of time, one could argue that I’d gain a lot more from just picking up a sefer, but it’s nice to have the erudite PAA pick out just the right Teshuva. Something I could not have accomplished on my own. Which brings me back to the original purpose of the post- which was to extend my appreciation.

Actually, I believe the answer is YES, I have a friend who was telling me he’s highly considering moving there. There are already 5-6 more yeshivish couples and its going to be the next place to go. The houses are cheap (low 400’s) theres already a mikvah, eruv, kosher food, free busing within 15 miles for schools (far rockaway or queens). Although it is more modern the people are nice and accepting and its not an affluent city, rather just regular normal people. There is talk already about a new shul opening with the other Rabbanim behind it.

Baruch Schwartz, there is a group of yeshivish people who moved in there, one of my good friends moved there with her family. They have organized a shul that has a beautiful and inspiring davening. This group seems to be growing every week. You should know that they are also very makpid on getting along with and having shalom with their neighbors, all of whom are wonderful people with exceptional middos, regardless of how frum they are. It seems like a great place to live and is growing very fast

ZD: WADR, the 5 Towns is (in many ways) an extremely Yeshivish community (at least parts of it), with Aish Kodesh and Rabbi Knobel in the 5 Towns (I was by his yeshiva recently for an Aufruf, and was very impressed).

Also isn’t Rabbi Bender’s Yeshiva in the 5 Towns?

Boruch,That is exactly what I heard as well. They are very makpid on getting along with everybody there, and so far it has gone well. People are starting to buy there because of the affordability, and before the houses go up in value. All they want to do is create a nice chevra of families with the same sheifos of growth, and they don’t care if the people around them aren’t exactly the same. I am sure it will take off its just a matter of time. And the fact that the other Rabbi’s of the community are encouraging them is amazing. How many places do you find where the leaders of one shul encourage another to open

Of course there is some risk involved, but at the end of the day it makes a lot of sense on paper. My friend has a bunch of kids in a 2 bedroom apartment he wants to buy a house and he doesn’t have 650K, so what’s his options. He’s from Kew Garden Hills, but also some Far Rockaway people went (where you need 750K). I am not in the parsha to move yet so I can wait it out a little, but for someone who wants to act now the risk isn’t so bad. Also, there are some frummer people there and according to what he said they have a minyan already, so when everything is said and done there must be 10 families.

Transportation: the good- West Hempstead is two minutes from the highway ( Southern State Parkway ).

The bad: the West Hempstead branch of the Long Island Railroad is terrible. It is single tracked and has virtually no direct service to Manhattan. There is no service on weekends

It’s not a new community. It has about 900+ frum families, and several shuls, the largest of which is the Young Israel ( 700 families)

I think everyone is pretty confident it will work out. And it is not like they are moving to some out of the way town with no jews, and if it doesn’t work out they wont have necessities. This is a big Jewish community with a big mix of Hashkafos, but everyone gets along, which is a beautiful way to raise your family. But the houses are affordable and there is land (unlike Queens and Far Rockaway) and so people are very interested. The good part about buying earlier is that the house prices are still low. I suggest if you are interested, you should get in touch with one of the couples and possibly spend a Shabbos there.

The Rov of the YI, HoRav Yehuda Kelemer, ?????? is an ??? ???? ???. I’ve had the honor of meeting with him and talking to him and observing him.

I also remember his son from Yeshiva. He was also exceptional. He is a son in law of HoRav Shmuel Kaminetsky ??????.

Rabbi Bender’s Yeshivah (Darchei Torah) is in Far Rockaway.

Rabbi Kelemer IS an Adam Chashuv meod and a Gadol b’Torah. There is more than one Shul in West Hempstead, and an eclectic variety of FRUM Jews live there. Some are more modern, and some are less modern. They are Shomrei Torah u’Mitzvos, so let’s not get into borderline L”H about WH, which is a very affordable community.

I have heard that there was talk of a Yeshivish community being established there. I don’t know if it is happening so quickly. When WH was established (and I only know this from people who helped establish it, it was a religious wasteland. Very few frum people were there. And now it is a vibrant Orthodox community.

Cedarhurst was ALSO pretty much a religious wasteland when the frum people began moving in. It had one Orthodox shul, where I am fairly certain most members in the CR would not feel too comfortable davening. Not to denigrate the shul, but its mechitzah left a great deal to be desired. So the families that moved in, mine among them, left to form their own shul,a Young Israel, under the leadership of a most choshuvah rov.

Don’t discount a community because it is not exactly what you feel is ideal for you. Move in and slowly MAKE it your ideal place, while being careful not to step on anyone’s toes along the way. West Hemsptead’s present population is comprised of some really wonderful people.

Any updates on West Hempstead? I heard there is a more yeshivish shul that opened up and is very popular.

One update is that Rabbi Kelemer is still recovering from the hit-and-run that happened a few weeks ago.

    Just an FYI:

Rabbi Lesser’s shul, which is fairly new is more yeshivish, whatever that means. WH is a wonderful community that gets along without looking at each others yarmulkes.

Please be Mispallel for Harav Yehuda Ben Rivkah Leah–Rav Kelemer. He is recovering very slowly, and has many months of Rehab.

I have lived in West Hempstead for over 30 years and know the community well.

Over the past 2 years West Hempstead has exploded with growth; one new family moving in per week.

The homes are affordable, you will get great value for the dollar. All of the local Yeshivos (5 Towns, Far Rockaway and Queens) will tell you about the wonderful Middos that the children of West Hempstead have.

It is a very down to earth community, most Yiddin are Someach BeChelko.

There are many serious Yeshivish young couples in the Young Israel and they have their own “Young Couples” Minyan.

Also, Rav Uri Lesser, (A West Hempstead native), recently purchased a building for his “Yeshivish Shul” Beis Torah UTefillah which will be completed in March IY”H.
