I was recently at westgates kosher pizza shop in Lakewood, Pizza Place. The food was great, they had a very nice sit down area, good service etc. (if the owners are reading this – please add more kinds of cheese preztels. especially pizza preztels).

What struck me as hilarious was that right next to the pictures of r’ chaim and the brisker rav, were several drawings in what was unmistakably the manga style! They had the huge eyes, the tiny nose and mouth, etc. I wonder if the owners realize that in their store in the (largely) ultra frum ultra yeshivish town of Lakewood in one of Lakewoods most yeshiva – oriented neighborhoods there is on display a prime example of one of the most ‘goyish’ artforms. Manga cartoons are an icon of japanese culture, which has one of the highest percentages of athiests in the world. You can be sure that those cartoons aren’t about an eidele boy with yarmulka and tzitzis.

Though i guess one might argue that using the manga style to draw pictures of jews somehow makes it jewish (dont ask me how) . I guess its like the same thing as putting psukim and jewish words to rock/pop songs, which nearly everyone, even the yeshivish, dont seem to have a problem with

quark- I really dont think whoever drew those manga cartoons and displayed them was thinking so deeply: “Manga cartoons are an icon of japanese culture, which has one of the highest percentages of athiests in the world.” They were probly thinking “what a cute cartoon my kid drew. Let me hang it up to make him feel good.” Seriously, lets not get carried away.. Its a pizza shop. There also happens to be a video machine in the docs office with bob the builder. Next to the seforim. In the Ir Hatorah. And ppl still go.

Btw- I dont think its the same as listening to goyish songs with the words tweaked. That gets me super nervous- but I think most yeshivish ppl r ok with it cuz ther simply clueless.

I see your point, but actually it looked more like it was drawn by a proffesional artist and bought by the store. And its highly unlikely that a young jewish kid who was never exposed to manga would draw a picture that happens to look like manga.

And manga is not some kids cartoon like bob the builder. People of every age read manga in japan, and most of the time the comics are very adult themed (you dont have to read manga to know this).

Also it doesn’t have much to do with what they were thinking. My point was, that these goyish comics are the prime influence of what some day may be considered mainstream jewish art [the pictures were of jewish boys, BTW]. If you don’t have a problem with that, fine. some people may be more sensitive to this kind of thing than others

I am familiar with Manga- I had a friend who read alot of em and used to draw manga cartoons. And she is Jewish. I do know what you mean by them not being just for kids. But so are regular American comics.

Anyway, maybe i am over reacting a little here. The drawings are cute, and who cares what the japs use it for. Who cares that they came up with that style of drawing first.

Need to think this one over a bit…

“who cares what the japs use it for.”

that is an offensive term very insensitive to people of Japanese descent, just as bad as someone using the k word for us.
