I feel like the coffe room is extremely dead we have topics on the first page that were last touched a week ago. why was it so busy years ago but now its chatzi abandoned. i feel like if the cofferoom is not active the “h & jacks” will take over.

Any coffee room is only as good as its participants.

It used to be worse. When it started in 2008 it was full of Beis Yaakov girls chatting up a storm about every narishkeit imaginable and unimaginable.

Most of the topics are uninteresting (to me) and I assume the same with most other posters

You’re starting to make me wonder how many previous screen names you’ve had and how long you’ve actually been here and if you really are “just a bachur”

    Goldilocks – Great answer!!

Coffee – I think his posts kind of prove him to be both new and a bachur. And knowing why he has all this free time makes me feel better 🙂

I think the real answer to his question though is that the CR was one of the few moderated places to go to talk to other frum people and back then, I hate to say the truth, but people cared about what they exposed themselves to more than now. People send around not so appropriate memes that they never would have forwarded years back. They “skip over” nivel peh and topics that would never have been given their attention in the past. Anyone who reads comments on articles (anywhere) is exposing themselves to tons that most of us would never have considered letting into our heads 10 years ago.

So back when there was no whatsapp and people were more careful about what they read we had the CR for connecting and schmoozing. People now have whatsapp groups giving their phone numbers away like it ‘s nothing. Times have changed (unfortunately)

And last piece, I think, was the twitter damage. People used to have conversations. Even pig headed, narrow minded ones. Things evolved over time to people throwing pot shots, responses, put downs at each other. We take up a cause and get ready for battle. If you compare even the angry threads from before that time, it is so much different than the machine gun style, spit your piece out to the world type of “communicating”, sometimes on three different forums at the same time.
Not everyone does this obviously, not every conversation is like this, but it is definitely a very huge shift from before. People have causes, defend their teams. It used to be like that in the zionist/anti zionist threads but all others were more conversationalistic. Now….

The times when Papa bar abba and his younger brother were active, I would stop by to read their hilarious posts.

    I miss AYC and Middlepath..
Now it’s just Joseph having conversations with himself under a million different usernames.

Yeah… I miss my good friends (& enemies!!!) from back then… Hey.. where are you all?!?

Loved to read the quips and posts from a few .. P B A foremost on my mind. Then there was Eclipse who “had the place”.

This place went thru so many eras (or cycles). So many different “contributors”. So many different TYPES of “contributors”.

At the time I first met this place, it was in middle of <Wash/Spin Cycle>. Agitators fully engaged! Oh how this place roiled!!! Who cares what they were arguing about… I just heard the noise with the door safely in lock position. How I watched it bounce up down and sideways.

Then the unfortunate day… I learned how to post and add topics.. יוסיף דעת יוסיף מכאוב.

feivel doesn’t come by often enough. sam4321s missed. squeak hasn’t shown his face in too long. I Can Only Try has been gone too long. PM/hello99 is a choshuve Rov (in the full sense) who freely shares his halachic expertise. mdlevine is loved by all. Kapusta, smartcookie and Lilmod Ulelamaid always have much wisdom to share.

There are too many others in our friends and CR family list who equally deserve recognition to be mentioned. Consider yourselves included and rejoin the discussions ASAP! No more excuses for being AWOL.

And special mention to itzik_s/600 Kilo Bear Z”L who never failed to make excellent points others overlooked and always did so with his signature humor. We will meet him again with Moshiach bimheiro byomeinu.

My brother Shlita? He ל”ע works ח”ו. Two and a half jobs. And learns full time. I never told you (or anyone here) this, he’s brilliant!

Little Froggie, are you trying to hint to us that you (unlike your brother shlita) live a carefree life, with little work and lots of play??

Whats App is a factor as well. You can easily communicate and debate in large groups without it being posted on the internet for the world to see.

Online behavior changed the world in amazing ways, indeed. Early in Internet times, a Rebetzin refused to have her family photo online for a shul. now, everyone is instagramming. Maybe, it is not an ayn hara anymore when there are more people posting than reading.

As to flaming, it existed in early online groups even with full names. I don’t think people understood that this is going to be a permanent record. Luckily for them, old search results are on page 10.’

Alizgitt- first, Hello! Nice to see you.
I did mention whatsapp and you are so right. I’ve never understood giving so many strangers your phone number tho. And accompanying life status updates via your picture.
