you know ,you just think it’s plain ugly? the one that drives you nuts and every time you hear it, you cringe? (and before we start, we are not insulting anyone, this is just a matter of personal preference/taste)
the one that drives me absolutely insane is….. russian!!!!!!! and my brother and my friend and the rest of my family (but mostly my bro and friend) torture me to no end saying things with a russian accent JUST TO ANNOY ME. and my brother even made up this new word “vushnitzky” which he says at any random moment when i am around. and he and my friend can immitate the accent (among many others) extremely well. it drives me up the wall.
on the other hand, i would love to learn french and dutch. they are stunning languages!

We already had an anti-Yiddish thread. My favorite is Hebrew. I think it is silly to speak Yiddish. If it is a language it belongs in the Museum of Languages.

I have a love of languages and they all sound fascinating to me but if I had to pick, then the worst would be German
and best: Spanish, but only when spoken in a real spanish accent and French.
Worst: Spanish. I can’t take it anymore!!! All I hear living in NY is Spanish this and Spanish that. Enough! When I make a phone call and I hear press 1 for English I flip out!!! It should always be English. Ahhh. America .
Best: ( English) and favorite accent is Australian!

Putting aside Lashon Kodesh, which is of course in a class of its own; even from a secular standpoint no other language’s grammar can compare to the perfection of Dikduk-

And Whats wrong with Spanish, Its the 2nd or 3rd most spoken language in the World (Spanish has more native Speakers, but English has more total speakers)

Yes, Avi. Hundreds of thousands. There are over a quarter million Satmar alone. Add in the many many other Chasiduses. Add in the Litvaks in Eretz Yisroel that speak Yiddish.
Just trying to get back on track, can we leave the pontifications and recriminations regarding Yiddish for a different thread? Erev Shabbos, and a hot one at that, is a bad time to get all tzuhitzt (pardon the Yiddish) over things!

I happen to love English. It has such precision in its words. It’s a shame that most people in the CR have no concept of the language. And we can include the OP and title of this thread as examples.

For me, I think the OP would seriously dislike me. I also have a habit of imitating various accents and am also quite good at that, especially Ivrit and English with Russian, French, German, Italian and Ethiopian accents. I love switching accents continuously. My wife doesn’t like it when I do it… which only makes it even more fun.

Sure, there are those who speak Ivrit. There are also many who speak Yiddish. I know myself since we were neighbors and friends of quite a few of them in Yerushalayim. I must say that, from experience, it seems that Bnei Brak has more (monolingual) Ivrit-speakers while Yerushalayim has more primarily Yiddish-speakers.
Haifagirl, liked your post. Conjured up a great image. Pass that tomato sauce! But I can’t agree about the precision of English. Do you understand many languages? English is no match to some others. For starters- can anyone find me the English equivalent of these German words: “weltanschauung”, and, my favorite, “schadenfreude”?
Both words are also English words (originating from, and sharing a meaning with, German.) Otherwise,
weltanschauung means ideology.
schadenfreude means glee.

Completely wrong. Quite a few Litvaks speak Yiddish, including youth. As for chassidim, it’s not divided, but the vast majority (except for a few places such as Ger which are different). And it is nothing like ‘political reasons’. They speak this because their parents spoke it, and their parents spoke it, and their parents spoke it.
And sure, you can get by without Yiddish. But in the old-school world of Yerushalayim – I’m not talking about Merkaz HaRav, Torah Ore or the Mir – you’ll find yourself seriously limited and excluded from a lot of ongoing things if you don’t speak Yiddish.
Amongst the Yiddish-speakers I know are descendants of Rav Eliashiv, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. They 1) are not chassidish, 2) do not live in Meah Shearim, and 3) speak Yiddish as their primary language. All facts. I know many other families as well who speak Yiddish.
You might be an “observer”, but I was actually a living part of it for 6 years, until I moved to Gateshead.
Choppy, I”ll accept ideology for weltanschauung, even though the meaning encompasses more than just that, but scahdenfreude is absolutely not glee. Freude is happiness, or glee if you prefer; schadenfreude is something else entirely. Anybody else?

While you “observed” the Yerushalayim scene, I was part of it for close to a decade. What the Chassidishe Gatesheader responded to you is 100% true.
For most Chassidim [besides Ger] Yiddish is their first language and some speak Ivrit just as well as Yiddish.

Chassidim are divided, -over language??? -Nonsense
THe Meah Shearim’niks [mainly the Ahrle’lach don’t ever speak Ivrit -even when going to goverment offices,. Instead they speak “Loshon Hakodesh” -which sounds like broken Ivrit to get their needs and wants across, which they do pretty well.
I think that when Avi K says he is an ‘observer’ of the Yerushalayim scene, he means that he sometimes sees chareidim at the Kosel.
Well, many of us don’t even go there. I myself haven’t seen the Kosel for something like 2-3 years (and I was living in Yerushalayim until 1 year ago). And in my 6 years in E”Y I have never been to Chevron, not even once – my rov told me not to go there, it is not accepted in the circles with which I affiliated when I was there.
Of course some would then simply claim that I must have been part of a miniscule extremist group, but in fact I’m talking about one of the largest, most important groups in Yerushalayim, and plenty of others follow the same rules as well.
I was always a bit of a strange duck, though, for having plenty of outside connections (I never limited my world to include only people with 1 specific hashkofoh). I respect everyone for what they believe – within certain limits – as long as they respect me. That includes Dati Leumim, Chardalim, Mizrachim, Litvaks, all various chassidim, and anything and everything in between. The only thing I cannot stand is those who twist the truth for their own purposes. (I am *not* accusing anyone of doing that here – just making a general remark.)
zichmich: The Reb Ahrelech don’t speak lashon hakodesh any more than they speak modern Hebrew. They never learned how for political reasons.
