    i would say:
    Chumash/Tanach
    Gemara
    Mishnayos
    Shulchan Aruch
    Siddur
    Mishna Berurah
    Kovetz Meforshim
    Rambam
    Kitzur Shulchan Aruch
    Piskei Teshuvos
    Rashb’a?
    What else?

What about sefer Chovos Halevovos? (duties of the heart) a sefer all about faith and trust in Hashem the king of king ruler of the world. Isn’t a person’s Bitachon and Emunah one of the fundamentals of yiddishkeit?

Buy it for your home today. Among many other seforim that you didn’t list

I would say Tur, not Kovetz Meforshim on every/multiple meschanta, Rivta, Tzalch, Pnei Yeshua, Eyin Yaakov, English seforim on Kashrus, Brachos, children, niddah and shabbos.

These issues don’t make so much sense

Kovetz meforshim? On which mesechta? All of them?
    Rashba?
    Ritva?
    Tzlach?
    Pnei yehoshua?
Not to mention Tanya and lkutei sichos?

    For EVERY home?
    No way

Much more important than any of the above is shemiras shabbos kihilchoso (English or Hebrew depending on proficiency)
Some modern likutim on practical halacha as another poster mentioned

I’d add shmiras shabbos kehilchasa, “hamafteach” from feldheim, the kezayis book, rav avigdor miller’s hashkofa trilogy, rabbi chaits illustrated 39 melachos, sefer chofetz chaim, yad moshe / yad yisroel indexes, beis halevi on chumash

Yeah, Chovos Halevovos is important. I shouldv’e mentioned it.

    @TAS
I’m talking about the regular seforim everyone should have. Of course, they should have every sefer, we could make a list of all the seforim in the world…

I was talking about every home. I use all these seforim and they are helpful for both inyan and bekisus. If one does not have the skill to learn in depth, than one should have more english seforim to aid him. I did not mention rabbi akiva ayier, tofos rid, etc… because theses are extras. The ones I mention, I feel are important and very useful to understand rashi/tofos and halacha.

I’m sorry to say so, but someone learning iyun without the heiligeh reb akiva aiger is לא ראה מאורות מימיו…the way reb akiva eiger answers a tosfos, and then proceeds to uproot everything you thought you knew about the sugya with mesmerizing mastery of shas on his fingertips….

I know many people who would agree with you and I would be incline to agree with you. But I personally have not gotten the “pull” from reb akiva eiger. And I know many other people who may not understand his phsatim. So that is why I didn’t put it on the list. But you didn’t put it on your list. Do you feel that everyone should have the tools to learn iyun or are you assuming that everyone is including the people who don’t learn iyun?

    Babylonian Talmud IS an anti-depressant

Many a good Jew buried their problems, their worries, their tzoros in the pages of the Talmud

Using the term “fluff” for The Heileger Rabbi Akiva Eiger is extraordinarily sad and painful to encounter

I can’t imagine what type of Chinuch background would enable that kind of statement.
One doesn’t have to personally learn from a Sefer or even purchase it, but to speak disparagingly ?!?!

Yeah TAS, I was going for non-iyun, because once we start talking about iyun, you need a lot of rishonim and achronim, but everyone has their own “go to” seforim. I’m very into birchas avrohom, machlas moshe, rav elyashiv’s “haaros” series, minchas yehudah, ayalas hashachar…i find my questions are often addressed by those seforim. I also like to use dibros moshe…all of this aside from the basics like pnei yehoshua, reb akiva aiger, chasam sofer, and others depending on the mesechta, like aruch lenar

This thread got way stranger than I thought it would be judging from the title. But also sad to see that no one mentioned Mishna Torah (Rambam). . . .

@ maskildoresh I meant no disrespect to reb akiva eiger. I meant extra for iyun and I wrote the wrong word. But I am glad that you fulfill the mantra of the site: quick to judge and to attack. Some times people make mistakes. I would change it now if the mods let from fluff to extras. I have a lot of respect for reb akiva eiger.

There is a reference sefer that can be downloaded from online at https://hebrewbooks.org/57246 which covers both bekios and iyun, named Kovetz Yesodos and Chakiros, consisting of over 1200 pages available at Greenfeld Judaica relatively cheap.

Although the second edition of Piskei Tshuvos is much improved, it is still only reliable for those that are familiar with the original sources.

Anyways the Dirshu Mishna Berurah seems poised to replace it. Not to say that it itself is without similar flaws.

good addition, more of a “need” than most seforim here.

I dont really get this thread.
Everybody “needs” to own a pnei Yehoshua?

IF this thread was seforim that its nice for a ben torah to have sure definitely pnei Yehoshua, Tzlach. Though even then I don’t think its a “need” and certainly not for “every frum house”

    > Why is 300 or at least 1200 baud insufficient?

tircha detzibura, I can learn faster than that. I also remember wanting to upgrade to 2400

    > And a bunch of paper to print what we are studying for Shabbos!

Save the trees! If you have good memory, you can learn by heart what you learned during the week. If you do not, you can continue learning the same small sefer again and again, like I do.

    #2032305

You can also live near a shul or a kollel and save your living space. Soon, Jews will be last people to own the tree-made books. And even they. When I study with kids, I model reading from a book, while they are perusing online. We have encyclopedia and it is used once a week when I tell them some history nuggets and we need to look up details.
