What are you good at? What are your talents? What do you enjoy doing? Answering those questions should give you a good idea of what you should do.

Gumball, I think a lot of people out there would hire an interior designer, but it’s not just a matter of colors and designs. You have to be able to work with people, hear what they say, understand what they want and be able to bring their vision into reality. Just think about designing newly built mikvaos, batei knessios, etc, and even offices, not just people’s houses. You should look for a program that will train you and perhaps there is a certificate that can be given at completion of the program, but I would look around and find any people in the business already and see if you can learn the business from them since I personally think that is what makes a good interior designer. You have to know where to find the good deals.

Why not question yourself, what should you be NOW?

You cannot really predict the future, although you can do hishdadlus and work on reaching your goal. However the time is now!

Whatever you decide to do, DO RESEARCH ON IT FIRST.

For instance, do research before becoming an interior designer because right now I have 2 friends out of work for 2 years since the job market is not so big for this kind of work as of now. Iy”H when the economy picks up when obama is out of office getting a job as a designer might be easier.

Also, anyone thinking of going to law school should think very hard about it before doing it. There are NO jobs even for the people who are on top of the class. I know many people who went to law school, couldn’t find a job so either opened a business of their own or went back to school.(not that you mentioned it lol)

I actually think that being a nurse practioner is a great job and many more drs are hiring them as opposed to Drs because you can pay them a little less than drs but the nurse practioner can do almost as much as a dr. I think you need to become a nurse before becoming the “practioner” part.

    Gluck either way!!!

Oh, also make sure you love what you’re planning on going into because I did not make sure and I stopped my schooling for it when I was soooo close to finishing:( In the long run it worked out to be for the best but it’s a little sad dropping out of school!

I was thinking either psychologist or serial murderer. I’m having trouble deciding which would be more in-line with my talents. I guess I’ll just have to do the research and see. Also its important to think about which one of them will give me more sipuk. I don’t want to become a psychologist and then wake up one day and realize I’d be having much more simchas hachaim as a serial murderer.

The important decisions in life are always the hardest.

Gumball, interior design is a great field, but it is very competitive. You would really have to stand out and be committed to it, which I’m sure you can be if you really love it! There are a number of really good design schools, some even online, that you can get a degree from within 3-4 years. I am currently getting a degree in a different design field, a bit more engineering related, but the school I am at is great. If you like design in general, there are other, closely related fields you can go into that are less competitive and may give you better job opportunities. But definitely do what you love doing!

I think that when you grow up you should make it a priority and perhaps a full time occupation to be fat. Or at least choose a profession which will not pull you away from this goal.

The benefits thereof are many-fold. Most importantly you do not want people to judge you by your looks, but rather by your insides. To this end it is important that you try what you can to minimize the options. Being fat will keep you warm in the winter. It also makes it very easy to operate those office chairs that go up and down.

gumball, i am with you on that personal shopper idea! that is something i would also be interested in going into. first of all, i love shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i figure, why not make money doing what i do best 🙂 ? and that is also a form of design, you know, deciding the right looks and colors… for diff people. sounds like fun! i doubt that’s what i’m gonna end up doing with my life, and anyway, i dunno how many ppl out there really hire personal shoppers (they don’t where i come from), but if that is an option for you, go for it! you can practice on me!

    #821429

when i saw this thread it was obvious it was you gumball! Can’t you grow up and than decide?!! Lol to this whole thread… (amongst others, i like that brain surgeon idea health!)

While nobody knows what they will be when they grow up

Instead of Personal Shopper, have you thought about being a Buyer. Most companies have a department whose job it is to buy stuff. Stores like Macys, Bloomingdales have people whose job it is to buy clothes (in wholesale) Toys R Us has people whose job it is to buy toys.

If you don’t know the difference between a personal shopper and a corporate buyer, you still have a lot to learn until you are old enough to decide what you will be when you grow up.

Why not a sales lady in a clothing store?

Hashem implanted in every human being a liking to a particular profession, otherwise everyone would occupy themselves in the same field with no benefit to mankind. You realistically have to take stock in which field is best for you. While a personal shopper might sound glamorous to you at this stage of your life, it might be a dream and nothing more. in the meantime, be a teenager and enjoy life!

My husband since his mid teens knew what he wanted to do as an occupation. He self taught himself his profession while in Bais Medrash, was able to do it in the early morning and at night when he was in Kollel for 10 years and B”H he never looked back.

Buyers are not low class store workers.

I deal with buyers, they actually go around to showrooms and shop for the store. They make up what should be ‘in’ this season.

This is just a guess, as I don’t know you, but I vote clothing design or fabric design (for clothes or home furnishings). Consider studying at FIT or Parsons.
