If you have a ring of keys that have many keys that look the same, how do you tell them apart? Im starting to get fed up that every time I have to open certain doors its a whole process of going through all the keys. Looking for some idea how to mark my keys.

    Thanks

Key covers! Found at home depot and similar stores. These work for house keys, not sure about car keys.

They sell colorful plastic covers that go over the top of the key.

There are color-coded key covers you can get in most variety stores or locksmith stores The key fits in through a hole in the cover and then stretches to fit around its head. But until you find them, you can use nail polish of different colors (if you have any) and simply paint a different color on each head of the keys. It lasts a long time.

    They’re also available on Amazon.

Just paint the tops with nail polish. Why spend money?

If they really are the same, they’ll all open the same lock. Otherwise, study the grooves.

You can also use nail polish to mark clothing, utensils, etc. Really useful. I use it all the time without it ever going near my fingernails (except, of course, for when I’m sloppy).

nail polish is a good pet rock

    #1010186

Those key covers cost over $5 for a pack. Nail polish is $1 at most 99 cent stores.

And, as rebyidd said quite correctly, it can also be a good pet rock.

GG if an unmarried bochur is seen buying nail polish it could raise some questions.

Are we so nosy that we look at what everyone is buying to judge them? I sincerely hope not.

If he looks at his nails while buying nail polish, it might be assumed that he has nails.

Most places that cut keys can also etch a letter or two into the top of the key. That way you don’t have to remember which color stands for what.

Goq: Most unmarried bochurim have female relatives. I keep a tube of lipstick in my toolbox for marking moving parts like locks. Believe me, I didn’t buy it myself.

Exactly you did not buy it yourself because if you did it might raise some eyebrows.

My method is to create a string of 4 – 6 numbers for each key (based on the amount of teeth and depth of the teeth) and associate each lock with that series of numbers. I trained myself to do this in high-school (the story behind that is beyond the scope of this thread but you can click here to read that story). I’ve had many keys over the years, never used a color coding system and rarely inserted the incorrect key into a lock.

Why don’t you just punch many more holes in your belt and stick keys into them? It would be a sinch to remember that hole number 33 is this while number 72 is that.
