Israel has so many wonderful places to visit, but it is small geographically. Charedim living in Yerushalayim, in the Merkaz and so forth…as well as frum people from abroad perhaps…what are their big vacation areas?

I mean something sort of what the Catskills are for New Yorkers (I don’t mean to compare the Catskills to EY) – a place that swells with frum Jews – of different backgrounds – in the summer months.

Do they have that or is it more spread out?
What about places like Safed? Tiberias or any other city on the Kinneret? Haifa or Akko?
Or maybe it’s the southern regions or elsewhere that gets the vacation traffic?

Wouldn’t that question depend on whether you are talking about (as examples), a Ben Torah who lives off tsadakah versus a Baal ha-Bayis running a successful business?

Mostly up north. The entire north of the country fills up with Chareidim during bein hazmanim. That includes Tzfat, Tiveria, Haifa, Afula, Karmiel, etc.

This really varies by one’s financial and personal situation. During Bein Hazmanim the North (Golan / Galil) are packed. If one has the money, some places such as Switzerland also see an influx of chareidim on vacation.

There are few mehadrin hotels, most people will visit an area and then make do with their own setup for food.

Israeli chareidim don’t vacation. They use their money wisely. For the essentials. They don’t have much more than that, nor do they wish or need more than that.

    Joseph,

I was waiting for you to write exactly that but as usual, you don’t know what you’re talking about. As another poster wrote, many charedi families do go up north before Elul. They plan well and spend their money very carefully but they certainly take vacations during the summer. Been there, seen it.

BTW, exactly how many times have you actually been to Eretz Yisrael?

    Joseph,

If you actually live in Meah Shearim part of the year then how could you not know that many charedim go up north on vacation after Tisha B’av?

Common Saychel: The guys arriving every Sunday night at JFK and EWR generally do not rush out to BP, Willy, Monsey or Lkwd and go door-to-door schneuring for handouts to send a Chareidi family on vacation to Tiveriah or perhaps even Zurich….Likewise, you don’t see a lot of VRBO ads from charedi families living in Meah Shearim or Bnai Brak to rent out their “villas” while they are off on vacation.

CS: I recall there used to be lots of kvetching here in the CR when YWN would run a story about some rebbe from EY flying off with his gabboim on a private jet paid for by one of his wealthy chassidim to a summer vacation in Switzerland or winter vacation in Florida. That seemed to be more of a minhag among the chassideshe A-listers. I don’t recall seeing similiar stories about R’ Chaim Z’TL or some of the other Litvish rabbonim flying off somewhere on vacation although I might have missed it.

@GH, sadly the Litvaks picked up the bad habits and they do that too, loads of pics of them in Florida, Alps etc.

Common: Many Rabbeim would love to take a vacation at home but there their homes are always open and they never get a break. For their health it’s important they get away a bit to recoup. I’m telling you they don’t go on vacations to chill. You don’t want to have the responsibilities they have or hear the stories they hear.

My husband will never forget his trip up north every year as a boy. They left Yerushalayim in the morning, davened in Tzfas and Meron all day, and went back to Yerushalayim at night. That was their bein hazmanim summer trip.

Doctors told Netziv that he needs a vacation and family members convince him to go to Lithuanian lakes. He ran away back in a couple of days. Of course, those were pre-internet days. Maybe if he could have taught in Volozhin over Zoom, maybe he would have stayed.
