I was on the bus from Boro Park to Williamsburg when it happened. I saw the towers come down. It is still like it was yesterday.
Where were you that day?
I had just arrived at work in downtown Brooklyn the first plane had hit and we were listening to the radio as the second tower was hit, we listened as the towers fell, we were sent home from work i had to wait on the street a couple hours until the subways started running again you could smell the acrid smoke and all the people waiting were just stunned, speechless.
sitting in 8th grade classroom, our teacher went to move her car at 10 to 10 bec of alt. sides and she didnt come back till like 11:30….and we just sat in our seats and waited and waited….
I was walking to vote in the NYC primary election that day, and someone told me outside the public school that a plane hit the WTC. I figured it was an accident and it reminded me of the time a plane hit the Empire State Building many years ago. After voting, on the way home, I saw big clouds of smoke rising from Manhattan. Then I knew it was much bigger.
I was at work at SSA headquarters, having an email discussion with a friend about the efficacy of online petitions. All of a sudden he sent me an email that said “terror attack on the World Trade Center.” I tried to get on msnbc.com but couldn’t, so I knew something big was going on. I walked over to the center of the floor, where there was a TV set to CNN hanging from the ceiling. I got there just in time to see the second plane hit. (SSA headquarters was later closed for the day over the fear that a plane may be aimed there as well).
I was in 10th grade. It was right after shacharis, and there was some word spreading through the halls about a plane crashing into the twin towers. At first, I figured “big deal”, so a couple stupid people crash their private jet into the buildings and end up killing themselves (and I figured nobody else got hurt). Then we heard about the second plane, and then about the collapse…
Was eating breakfast. well, it was bein hazmanim. .
My older brother comes running into the kitchen, that he got a phone call about an accident on the twin towers.
I was like, big deal. place accidents happen frequently. he gave me that look and said this is the TWIN TOWERS. as we tuned into CBS News, they announced that they have reports about a second plane.
by the time we heard about the other hijacked planes, we had this feeling like there is no where to run! we are under attack!!
Arrived via PATH to WTC at 8:25am. Sat down at my desk across the street from WTC ( 1 Liberty Plaza ) at about 8:35am. I was the first to the window overlooking WTC after the “boom”. I remember the look of terror on each of my colleague’s faces as they got to the window and saw the North Tower. Our building was (at first voluntarily ) evacuated. Everyone was on the street looking up at the bodies falling to the street. I headed for the subway (to go to family in brooklyn as I felt getting back to NJ would be impossible) and was going down the steps near Chase Plaza Wall St 2/3 station as the second plane hit. I was telling folks coming up the subway steps to go back home. They looked at me like I was a lunatic and practically pushed me out of the way. I’m almost shaking as I’m typing this.
It was during davening and chumash class. we heard terrorists had crashed a plane full of people and thats all we heard. we had an assembly for tehillim IIRC because some of the students had parents in the WTC.
my uncle was on the one of the last trains into wtc and basically under the tower when the 2nd plane hit
I was in the Oitzar HaSeforim (library) in Yeshivas Mir in Yerusholayim. There must of been 10-20 of us. Everyone was minding their own business, each one absorbed in their sefer, when all of a sudden one bochur jumped up from his seat, staring at his cell phone, and with a look of shock and horror screamed, ” A plane just hit the World Trade Center!” We all looked up, and stared, waited for more news, but he just ran out. 10 seconds later we heard a “bang” in the Bais Medrash downstairs. The gabbai who gave a ‘klap’ by the amud, started to say a kappital tehillim aloud.
I was a bachur back then, from Canada, and did not know that the WTC and the Twin Towers were one and the same.

I was in a small yeshiva in Brooklyn. I had davened Shacharis and was walking to yeshiva. I was at a light when I noticed a large, dark cloud in the sky. I looked at it and realized it was smoke. I just thought there was a fire nearby – but then realized I couldn’t smell one. I walked to yeshiva and someone there with a radio told me what had just happened. We ran to a store on the corner, where the owner had put out a small TV to see the news. We watched for a bit, then went back to yeshiva. The Rebbe told us we would start seder as normal, but we should have in mind that our learning should be a merit to those in downtown Manhattan. We couldn’t concentrate on our learning very much, and the Rebbe noticed. He spoke about it for a few minutes, then told us that if anyone wanted to go be with their families, he understood. We went to the store again, and saw that the towers had collapsed.
I saw on the TV the smoke cloud that was enveloping the area. My father works near there, so I immediately tried calling him. There was no answer on his phone. I called my mother, and she told me that she’d spoken to him, and he was walking home over the Brooklyn Bridge. She asked me to go home and meet him, as she didn’t know what he’d be like. I went home, and found that my father was already there.
He told me that someone in our neighborhood worked in the WTC, and was missing. Another neighbor’s brother had been on one of the planes. I was friends with the son of one of them, and knew his father. To this day, thinking of it chokes me up.
The rest of the day? We stayed glued to the news, hoping to hear that the people we knew were found, that they were ok. Unfortunately, it was not to be.
In bed (we live in LA) having just moved into our house the previous night. We awoke to the news on the radio and couldn’t process what was going on.
I was sitting in my studying room, studying and listening to music on the radio. Then on the radio a news alert said a plane had crashed into the WTC. I went to a room with a TV (I wasn’t frum yet then), turned on CNN and saw the second plane go in. I clearly remember that at first, most assumed it was an accident. When the second plane crashed, things changed….. Suddenly it was realized this was not an accident at all. Then came the Pentagon, then came the one in a field. I remember it all quite well.
Why, actually, does everyone seem to remember only the WTC planes? There were 4 planes – one in the Pentagon and one in a field as well. The people who were on those planes, and in the Pentagon, are no less dead, unfortunately.
TCG – because the two WTC planes caused the most destruction, by far. (3,000 victims compared to about 100 at the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.)
I was also in my 8th grade home room class. After our teacher told us what had happened, we were told that the phones were so overloaded they could not reach our parents. A number of my classmates parents worked in the WTC. I just remember crying because my father was a puce officer in the city, and I couldn’t reach my parents. BH my father was fine but he lost a lot of great friends, heroes who went back into the buildings to get more people out. I cannot believe how long it has been, it still feels like yesterday.
I was at work in Downtown Brooklyn, on the 21st floor, watching the 1st tower billowing in smoke. As the 2nd plane was approaching, some of us thought it may be a rescue plane. The instant it rammed into the 2nd tower, we knew with absolute certainty, that this was full fledged terrorism.
I got into a subway which was still running at the very beginning, to Lower Manhattan. I was a few blocks away from WTC, when we began to hear this unforgettable sound of the Tower imploding. As fast as we could run, the smoke was coming after us even faster. I dashed into some building into the basement, to escape the oncoming smoke.
Eventually we were told that we have to leave that building; By then, the air had already began to clear, and I was walking up by South Street Seaport, going North. As I was passing one of the intersections, I saw the 2nd Tower implode.
In light of the fact that even the WTC imploding, the air cleared up in about 20 minutes, therefore they should have 1 day clear out Lower Manhattan, and simply blown up the Deutsche Bank Building, and this entire saga would have been over in a matter of minutes, instead of having endured for years & 2 dead firemen.
In Boro Park I think I voted in between the first and second plane hit. I came out and caught a paper with burn marks on it. I didn’t know how serious it was. I would of kept it.
I was at work in my Shul, getting the Rosh Hashanah bulletin written and sent out. My friend called me to tell me to turn on the radio fast, and it was a NIGHTMARE. A relative of my niece’s husband was one of the victims in the Twin Towers.
I was at a doctor’s appointment. I remember the nurse made an offhand comment about someone doing something like this every few years or so. I don’t she realized what it would turn out to be or she never would have said that. We had a normal school day like usual, though a few teachers took the opportunity to talk to the students about things like terrorism, hatred, and tragedies, etc.
I’m pretty sure it was just like this year. On a Tues. -the third day of Selichos.
Was pretty young and in school. they let us out early and only understood the full impact days later.
I was in 10th grade. My teacher said there was an explosion in Manhattan, sounded like a car blew up.
Then we got more details….
Never forget the Jewish date Elul 23, which was Sunday night/ Monday.
I was on an american airlines plane from Newark to LA departing 825am. Flight in front of me was the flight to San Francisco. New York times reported that our flight was a target as well but something went wrong. (chasdei Hashem). We made an emergency landing in Cincinnati and were stuck there for two days. We had to take a 20 hour bus ride on 3 different buses back to New York. When we came close to the Lincoln tunnel an had our first view of manhattan the entire bus was stunned……..
I spent the first ten years of my career, 1986-1995, at 1 WTC. I started on the 71st floor and was on the 31st floor during the 1993 bombing.
I woke up in the middle of the night 9/10 – 9/11/2001, with a terrible stomach ache and was annoyed because I needed to get up early to be in my office in Queens by 7:30 AM and this was disturbing my sleep. It was my first day of classes for that semester of grad school at Brooklyn College, so I had to leave early to get back to Brooklyn.
We had a morning conference call every day at 9:00. At 8:50, my boss called me from lower Manhattan – he and some of the other senior staff were there for a meeting – and told me that someone had flown an airplane into the Trade Center. We held a moment of silence at our morning meeting, and when we got out, the second plane hit. We locked our office down and went into crisis mode
I was in 7th grade and our teachers were all crying. It was scary. We had a big assembly in one of the classrooms and our teachers told us. Most of us didn’t even know what the World Trade Centers were.

Most of us live in the NYC area and we have a lot closer connection to the WTC than the Pentagon or the Shankesville,PA plane crash. Many of us were there directly , nearby and had to flee, Knew someone in the towers or know a rescue worker.
There were 40 Hatzolah Amblulances that were destroyed in the attack

I was in NY, a Hatzolah member ran into the room i and friends where in and told us he was heading to NYC due to some accident of a plane hitting the WTC, 30 seconds later we were on a roof viewing with a full view the sad sight of the WTC with a little smoke coming out,
A friend of mine turned on the radio were the reporter was screaming ITS NOT A TERROR ATTACK (i wish i can get those recordings)
Then we saw something change in the view and a lot of smoke started pouring out of the second building,little did we know that the 2nd building was just hit (we were viewing from the other side so we didn’t see the plane enter
We stood on that rooftop glued to the horrible sight, we watched the buildings crumble, there was papers flying all over, papers that flew out of those huge buildings.

I got out of the subway at Chambers Street right after the second plane hit. I was at work (well, I was in the building — I can’t really say we were doing any work) on Park Row when the buildings fell.
I can still remember the sights, sounds and smells of the day. I especially remember watching, after the towers fell, the clouds of dust and debris rolling down Vesey St. towards my building. I was on the seventh floor of a building that day, but the cloud engulfed us.

it is truly amazing that despite the 11 year time lapse from then to today the memories are as vivid as ever. interestingly enough this yortzeid is remembered twice every year, once on 9.11. and then the Yiddish date, 23rd Elul. It appears that most people associate 9.11 as the yortzeid. any thoughts

I was sitting at my desk in my office in Kemper Insurance Co in 1 WTC aka the north tower!!! Today is my birthday – 11 years old!!
I heard the radio report about the first plane and I kind of brushed it off, thinking it was a small plane and it was early and the building is probably pretty empty so maybe no-one would be hurt too badly.
I was in the car listening to 880 when they said the second plane hit and my blood froze.
We turned on the office TV to see what was going on, then we sprang into action. At the time I was working for a company that sold medications used in treating burn victims and we figured our hospitals would run short but unfortunately, the victims never made it out. We coordinated a police escort into the City and my minivan was a first responder.

I was there in my ambulance. Horrible scene. There are just some things I’d like to un-see.
I was in Gateshead just coming out of (the old) Boarding School where i used to teach a boy during lunchtime. A bochur from Yeshiva ketana across the road came over to me to tell me that there are 9 planes hijacked in the sky over new york, and terrorists are flying them into buildings.
I ran home to listen to the radio and found that the truth was slightly different. My first thought was, Bin Laden ym”sh is the only person who could pull this off!!
TCG – You are right that the other two planes are not given enough attention when it comes to 9/11 memorial. I think zahavasdad’s reasons for this correct, but I think one of the main reasons people focus on the WTC is that the twin towers were such an icon of America – it’s just such an easy image to recall that NY skyline with those magnificent buildings towering above. I don’t live in NY but I still saw the twin towers in this way. The pentagon’s architecture is definitely notable but it does not quite evoke the same magnificence as the twin towers did.
I must have been in kindergarten, but I don’t remember hearing anything about it. I actually didn’t hear about it until a few years later. I”m pretty slow on the uptake. And I just realized today that the Hebrew date (23) is the day before my Hebrew birthday. I always felt weird having my birthday in such a sad month.
