Rhetorically asking – is there anyone here who finds cream-sauce-herring (such as Flaum’s & Golden-Taste) too sweet? If so, is there any brand/variety herring that you or your acquaintances prefer, and that isn’t overly salty either?

    Thanks, from a herring non-maven

Schwartz’s Original Shtiglitz Herring is 100% without doubt the best, most amazing herring ever made. Use the thinnest non-flavored kichel you can find.

Why spoil a good piece of herring with phony cream sauce that adds calories and fat….make your own with freshly brined herring, a good white wine vinegar, allspice, peppercorns, bay leaves and as much sugar as you like (doubled for Ungarishe yidden). Serve on a dark Russian pumpernickel with thinly sliced onions

I second all of Schwartz’s herrings. Tastes fresh and not overly salty.

“i mean really?? you must be a very busy person…”

I’d really hate to see your level of outrage had the OP asked about CR preferences as between schmaltz and matjes preparations

“I watched a dolphin show and they prefer raw herring…”

Only partially true in relation to Atlantic dolphins. Pacific dolphins universally prefer Matjes w/o onionsl

To ywnjudy: In your last sentence, are you alluding to the “herring maven” in the Vita Herring commercials? I have not heard those radio ads in years.

And for those of you who do not recall the advertising tag line, it was/is: “Make your day a little bit brighter (pronounced Brooklyn-style without the final r-sound/it a little piece of herring by Vita.”
