a maspid for r’ avrohom genichovsky said that he was a real chossid, and anyone who doesn’t agree either did not R’ Avrohom zt@l, or does not know what a real chossid is.
I did know r’ avrohom and i always considered him to be a real real misnaged, so i want to know what defines a real chossid.
October 16, 2012 1:54 pm at 1:54 pm #899833NaysbergMemberThere is not much differences between Litvaks and Chasidim anymore. They might (or might not) dress a little differently; they might (or might not) focus slightly differently in which Seforim they learn. But there little essential differences.

October 16, 2012 4:04 pm at 4:04 pm #899835The little I knowParticipantThese days, the term Chosid (as opposed to Litvak)is comparable to the distinction between the American League and the National League in Major League Baseball. It denotes a specific alliegance without any meaning whatsoever to the quality of anyone or anything. In so many ways, the distinctions have become insignificant, such as levush, choices of seforim, etc. The learning in chassidishe yeshivos has become much more similar to that of litvishe yeshivos. It is commonplace for litvishe families to take their children for “upsherin” to a rosh yeshiva, and for litvishe yungerleit in kollel to sport beards and payos. Chassidishe yungerleit also exhibit many traits and behaviors previously attributed to the litvishe circles.
Is it not strange to see many of the dated references to the Vilna Gaon as ????? ????? ???????? The term was once a reference to someone’s level of kedusha. Today, it signifies traits and practices that are totally external. What a shame.
October 16, 2012 4:10 pm at 4:10 pm #899836☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThe definition of a “Chossid”, according to the Ramba”m (and others) is one who goes beyond the letter of the law.

October 16, 2012 4:39 pm at 4:39 pm #899837R.T.ParticipantA real chossid is IMHO, someone who lives Lifnim MiShuras HaDin. In that respect, Rav Elyahsiv zt”l, Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, the Chofetz Chaim and the Gr”a (to name just a few) were ‘Chassidim’.
October 16, 2012 8:54 pm at 8:54 pm #899838Kita Ches RebbiParticipantThe GR”A was famously called Hagaon Hachosid MeVilna. The title Chosid was hijacked by the chasidim, it didn’t always mean shtriemel, bekeshe etc.. Think Rav Yehuda Hachosid.

October 16, 2012 11:07 pm at 11:07 pm #899840KCR: The Chasidim didn’t start calling themselves Chasidim. It was the misnagdim that (derisively) gave them the name Chasidim, which they accepted in stride.
October 16, 2012 11:32 pm at 11:32 pm #899841Rav TuvParticipantHashem is The Real Chasid. Tzadik Hashem b’chol d’rachav v’Chasid b’chol maasav.

October 17, 2012 1:22 am at 1:22 am #899843HaLeiViParticipantHistorically, any select group with a unique Avodas Hashem where referred to colletively as Chassidim.
