I want to grow them in my garden, but I’ve never heard of anyone else doing that. Why?

Well I’ve never heard of a tomatillo, but if they’re anything like armadillos, as the name suggests, I can think of a few reasons people don’t plant them.

They’re a lot more like cape gooseberries than they are like armadillos.

Wait, so why don’t you just plant tomatoes?

Possibly because they don’t grow well where you live.

They taste different from tomatoes. And they grow in a husk.

Any decent seed catalog has tomatillo seeds. One of my favorite seed catalogs says they should be planted in pairs for best pollination and performance.

    So it’s like corn?

    Because they’re nightshades

    RebYidd23,

I want to grow them in my garden, but I’ve never heard of anyone else doing that. Why?

Because most hobbyist gardeners plant things that they eat, and tomatillos are not typically eaten or found in grocery stores in most of the U.S.

What do U.S. residents have against tomatillos?

    RebYidd23,

What do U.S. residents have against tomatillos?

Unfamiliar and unwanted are not the same thing.

Because their sugar content is too low and you can’t make any wine or alcoholic beverage from them.

(Those little husks look cute though. Kind of like a little tomato in a Purim costume.)

Why are tomatillos overlooked? Simple:- Because they really don’t taste good.

    Depends how you prepare them.

AFAIK, I’ve never eaten a tomatillo.

Maybe in the US they are overlooked because we don’t want to hurt them.

I just remembered that I once went to a simcha and on the plate with the dessert there was this little thing that looked like a tomato wrapped in leaves.

Obviously I did not eat it.

The Goq: Was it a CR poster that bought them?

Meno: Given the chance again, would you at least look at the tomatillos?

…..Btw how do I know if I have seen one IRL?

    That’s not why I didn’t eat them.

I didn’t eat them because they looked like little tomatoes, and tomatoes aren’t dessert

If they were being served for dessert, they were probably cape gooseberries.

They should have made an announcement, or at least put a note on the plate.

    I might have eaten it.
