Actually, that is NOT the case but its a good idea since the Zman after the summer in Tishrei is so broken up by the yom tovim AND the extra days before and after the actual days of the chag that those who work in yeshivos seem to require to prepare and get unprepared. Its actually costly to open the facilities and dormitories for a day or two and then close and then open again.

Chasidish Yeshivos that are closed during Tishri don’t have summer vacation, so it sort of equals out. The zman starts about Rosh Chodesh Cheshvon, give or take a few days depending on the Yeshiva. Some Yeshivas do try to start earlier to avoid such a long break – it’s not cast in stone.

Supposedly the idea is based on the timeline of the pre-war European Yeshivas when it took the Bochurim days of travel to reach home for Yom Yov, and days again to travel back after Yom Tov.

Although many are against so much time off, it’s generally useful for most households, as it’s a busy time, with setting up the Sukkah, and dismantling it afterwards and other Yom Tov related chores where bochurim can be handy and learn to help out around the house…

It’s because so many chassidish bochurim go to their Rebbes fir Rosh Hashonoh that there’s no point staying open.

In Gateshead bochrim are only accepted for Elul if they are committed to staying until and including Yom Kippur

Georidie: Not sure I understand….aren’t their rabbonin at the Yeshiva? Do you mean the out-of-town bochrim go home to their families for the yamim noraim?

chatzkal: The winter zman starts on Rosh Chodesh Marcheshvan. However, most litvishe yeshivos have an Elul zman.

The Litvish Yesivos also start on Rosh Chodesh Chesvan. And most Chasdishe Yeshivos go through the entire Av

Chasidish yeshivas also have an Elum zman, it just ends by the first slichos. Most Chasidish yeshivas do not have a full Av bein hazmanim as Litvishe yeshivas do, they have maybe a week after Tisha B’Av.

    GadolHadorah,
Yes they have Rabonim in their yeshivos, but being chassidim means they belong to a chassidus which is led by a Rebbe. So for yomim noroim they would leave their yeshiva and go to the main centre of their chassidus to be near the Rebbe. So a Vizhnitzer would go to Bnei Brak, a Bobover to Bobov in NY, Pshevorsker to Antwerp, etc.
There is a Beis Yaakov school near the Mir, and I remember that the rooms were rented out so Gerrer Bochrim and possibly Yingerleit as well, would dorm there from RH until after YK.
