Does anybody understand why the secular Israeli politicians are suddenly “asking sheilos” by gedolim if they should attack Iran? Whats this all about?! Or do they always ask before a war?

WIY: Throughout Israeli history (as far as I know), the government’s leaders have always conferred with Gedolim before undertaking military ventures. Whether they listen to those Gedolim’s advice is unclear. But the stories are famous of secular leaders asking for Brachos from the Lubavitcher Rebbe or the advice of Halachic figures.

All they’re doing is shoring up political support from wherever they can find it. If they could convince the Israeli Arabs to support them by asking shailos to their Mullahs, they’d do that too.

Pandering. Chareidim make up about %15 of the Knesset and with the way that Israeli politics works, every vote counts for a lot.

Also they need the Shas ministers’ votes.Eli Yishai is a member of the security cabinet so his ote is especially important.

Maybe they’re doing an appropriate Jewish thing. They aren’t consulting with the heads of the secular opposition, are they? But I don’t think they’re asking these gedolim shailos…

    1. There is a great liklihood there will be much blame to share, and they want the Hareidim to share the blame. Netanyau knows he’s in over his head, and wants to cover his you know what.

    2. Heavy casulties will probably necessitate massive reserve callups and conscription of many people now exempt. If the rabbanim are pro-war, it will be easier to draft yeshiva students and frum women. It’s one thing to say “why should we die for your war, which we advised you against” and another thing to refuse to fight in a war you had endorsed (similar to the “chicken hawks” in the USA).
