    Squirrels: For shooting with airguns.

Cats: For catching mice and rats.

We need animals to be able to brings Korbonos @Bayis Shelishi Bimheiro b’Yomeinu.

    We eagerly anticipate to merit to bring a Korban Pessach in just 19 days from now {& if Rosh Chodesh Nisson is already Al pi Reiyoh, probably already in 18 days from now, based on time of Molad this year}

Study the concepts of the food chain and ecological niches.

I believe the Gemara says we learn tznius from the cat, because it digs a hole and does its thing and then covers it up. I’m sure you can think of something we can learn from the squirrel.

There is something we learn from each animal otherwise Hashem would not have created it. Ask Dovid Hamelech all about it… Spiders, wasps, madmen etc.

If you are talking about a secular report then as Wolf wrote study the food chain that begins and takes part mostly under the ground from moisture and insects to the largest of all creatures is your answer. There’s plenty online on this both in video and text formats that are absolutely fascinating! Niflaos haboreh at its most revealing.

    Bees: Honey (for rosh hashana)

    Cows: Milk, cheese

    Ants: teach us diligence

Look in perek shira for more ways animals teach us lessons

Karbanos! (main reason for kosher animals- people didn’t originally eat meat)

    Animal research

Beauty and diversity of the world – millions of species

animals used in wars – horses, elephants

    transportation!

    farming – oxen, donkeys

    FOOD

There are many reasons we need animals, and many things we can learn from them, but the main one for me is to just watch them and see how amazing and beautiful they are.

To paraphrase an idea of R’ Avigdor Miller Zatzal, they testify to creation.

More than a flower or a tree or landscape, when I stop to look at animals, you just become speechless and marvel their form and behavior. They are samples of creation to behold.

Whether a fluffy squirrel who runs away or a fluffy cat who comes to sit on your lap or being captivated by the power of a tiger or the oddity of an insect, animals can put you in a sphere of spiritual contemplation where time stops and you watch with amazement. In a way, taking time to watch animals is more an experience than a thought.

    Hi yit.

Squirrels teach us that the way we dress matters (white shirt lol), since the only difference between and squirrel and a rat is a big, fluffy tail.

“Whether a fluffy squirrel who runs away…”

Hashem gave fluffy tails to rats to make them cute and called them squirrels.

BTGuy, I see you beat me to it.

For that matter, beware of any animal that may seem harmless; animals are animals and will do harm to humans given the opportunity.

They are needed so that the shochtim has a parnossah and for korbonos when the Bais Hamikdosh is rebuilt.

HaShem made them. Who are we to complain.

But depending on the animal, some are useful friendly, or tasty.

HaShem must have has a good reason for making mosquitoes and viruses, but that’s beyond me.

What is the report for? Biology or a limudei kodesh subject?

Could be, but if you say in a Biology report that the function of animals is to bring as korbanos, you might get points off. Alternatively, if you started blathering on about food chains and ecological niches in a Hashkafa paper, you might get blasted. Just saying.

whatever hashem brought into our world is for a reason

(whether we know the reason or we dont)

different animals have different jobs in the world

    example:bees/honey,sheep/wool,cow/milk…..etc

but yet again one always hears stories about animals that save lives, that are gilgulim, that teach us lessons…

everything is for a reason even things that seem bad

    Hi *Kapusta*

I would be proud to have you as the sole member of my fan club. But if you dont mind, with summer coming up I would prefer an air conditioner.

Thank you for the nice thought.

    “Biology is limudei kodesh.”

    Not exactly, but close.

I’m a big fan of the way Chovos HaLevavos describes our need / requirement to learn secular science, including biology (ie, anatomy / physiology) and others.

According to the Rambam (admittedly not a popular stance), biology would probably be included in Ma’aseh Bereishis, a very high level of Torah.

    Hi Cherrybim,

Sorry I beat you to it. But you know they say great minds think alike. And if that is the case, how did I get into the mix? lol
