i said good shabbos to s/o we passed as we were walking and she asked why i said good shabbos. and i told her we do b/c its nice. but why do we wish good shabbos when we pass ppl?
I second ZeesKite: it’s a nice way of greeting people with deference to Shabbos. Plus, you can even say “Good Shabbos” to people you don’t know – what a way to bring achdus to Klal Yisroel! (Unless, of course, you’re from Borough Park – then it’s just a way of broadcasting that you are a nut.)
One is supposed to greet people they meet. During the week it should be with a good morning/afternoon, etc. On Shabbos we replace it and say “Good Shabbos”.
I like that here we say “Shabbat Shalom.” Shalom is one of the names of HKB”H, and I think it’s nice to combine them together, almost like giving a bracha with each greeting.
hey guys. thanx for your answers. my sister asked my this q like 5x on the way home from a friend and “because” was not a good enough answer. (and of course she has perfect timing and asked 1x as a group of 8-9 bachrim passed by and heard me say “we say GS b/c its nice to do” and B”H these bachrim were mencshin and said GS to us so i didnt look like a hypocrite 🙂 )
now the hard part is gonna get this all to a 5 y/o level….
