School is NOT mandatory.
Under both Jewish and American law, school is not mandatory. All American states, public international law, and Halacha all recognize a right of parents to educate their children at home.
Schools however are more efficient, which is why most parents prefer them to various alternatives (e.g. home schooling, hiring tutors, etc.)June 19, 2014 1:24 pm at 1:24 pm #1020614splendaMember
akuperma: You have forgotten about the truancy laws.June 19, 2014 1:43 pm at 1:43 pm #1020615
splenda: American truancy laws require that you be educated up to a certain age — there is no requirement that you be in school.
In places where truancy laws are enforced (and usually such laws are only enforced against lowerw class minorities), home school students should bring a letter from their parents. In general, kids who are out when most kids are in school are left alone if they look and act respectably (and that includes frum kids on days our schools have off and the goyim have class), in part since police have better things to do, and in part since they don’t want to be sued for false arrest.June 19, 2014 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm #1020616Shopping613 🌠Participant
School teaches us a valuable lesson:
Sometimes in life we gotta do stuff we don’t like, and get along with things or people we don’t like…it’s life…
A wonderful example is M.A.T.H.

You need math to live. It is not a useless subject.June 19, 2014 3:10 pm at 3:10 pm #1020618
But you don’t need to learn math in school. Some might argue that one learns better out of school. Education is about learning and acquiring knowledge needed for life. School is about keeping kids off the street and out of their parents hair, but under the right conditions one can learn in a school.June 19, 2014 8:12 pm at 8:12 pm #1020619charliehallParticipant

True, but most parents aren’t capable of teaching math to their children.June 19, 2014 9:06 pm at 9:06 pm #1020621nishtdayngesheftParticipant

“Ben Gamla didn’t think so”
Another misquote by Charlie.
Yehoshua ben Gamla just made school available, however the preferred method was for a father to teach his child.
You must be enthralled by the ben Gamla charter schools, that is why you decided to drop his name even though the gemara says about him “zachor latov”, which would include his name.June 20, 2014 11:26 pm at 11:26 pm #1020623
