A non-Jewish supervisor e-mailed a Jewish employee that he was working like a Hebrew slave. The employee filed a religious harassment claim and recovered $10K in damages plus $10,980 in attorney’s fees. How would you feel if you were the employee?

I have no idea. Context matters.

Is “working like a Hebrew slave” a bad thing? If so I would be very offended.

If it’s a good thing I would be a little less offended.

When my kids take out the toys that I just put away and make an even bigger mess than there was before I cleaned, I tell them that they are giving me Avodas Perech. If I was translating that, I might say working like a Hebrew slave.

A non-Jewish neighbor recently used that phrase while talking to me and it didn’t bother me at all. I think it is a commonly used term by religious goyim to describe someone working really hard (based on their exposure to Shemos in their religion).

Never heard that or anyone ever say that ever ever like ever.

    I am vicariously offended

If I was the employee who filed the suit, guessing that I would be seriously offended.

Consider the reaction if a similar remark were made about a black employee. 😮

He might not have realized that Hebrews are Jews. I know a giyores who told me that when she learned about the Children of Israel in the Bible she always felt that she wanted to meet them, but she thought they had died out or been dispersed and didn’t exist anymore.

She was amazed when she came to Israel, and discovered that the Jews are the Children of Israel and they still exist.

No, I wouldn’t be offended. But then again, I don’t get offended easily.
