I recently proposed an idea for an article series to a prominent Jewish website. I sometimes get crazy ideas and act on them, but then usually my excitement tapers down and I don’t follow through. Maybe this is a good thing, or G-d’s way of helping me not feel the need to “do everything.” But I am having trouble here. I thought I’d be thrilled if the idea was liked, but now I have to actually go through with it! This means writing the articles, which is time consuming. But even if I do the work and it is well received, and I do believe I am capable, I feel weird still. Is it snius for a girl to be a writer? I feel odd having my name and voice be out there for the public to read so openly. Also, it just feels presumptuous somehow, perhaps I feel to young to inspire just yet? Maybe I’ll feel differently ten years from now. I don’t like this feeling, b/c I can’t tell if it is my low self-esteem, fears, or actually G-d’s way of telling me to slow down and focus my energy else-where?

I do not see why it would not be tzniut, but if you feel weird about it you could always write under a pseudonym.

    Congratulations!

Maybe it is the way you are supposed to get over your low self esteem?

And to put my writer’s hat on for a second, always remember when you write something and you don’t like how it came out just put it aside and try again. Trust me, on the way to writing both of my books there were entire chapters that got deleted! And for that matter there was a book that got half written before I stopped because I was not happy with the result, I may come back to it some day, or maybe not.

Me and you are in the same boat:)

I write random articles for the Jewish Press and have a serial in my community’s local jewish paper. My mother was a little uncomfortable with me taking this position as a young girl so she really wanted me to use a pen name but i felt that this is who i am and how i want to be identified so i dont care if people read and know its me.

Sometimes i do feel funny when i write an inspiring article on some hashkafic topic and people way older than me are reading it and they dont know how old i am so it doesnt matter but theres still that funny feeling of me inspiring people decades older than me!

But the important thing is Hashem gave me this opportunity and He gave it to you as well. Take it!!!!!!! Oppurtunites dont come every day. If its really something which bothers you the. Like someone said use a pen name but if you really have the time and will power take it! (Or i can lol;) )

    Good luck!

ultimateskier: You’ve passed this point long ago, probably, but you gave yourself away SO bad here…

    Love ya, though!

Everyone: her stuff is good. 🙂

I love to write also (big surprise…), and while I don’t write for the Jewish Press or anything people outside my school will really read (except by accident at their second cousin’s house, as I discovered to my astonishment when my mom’s sheitelmacher complimented me on something I wrote for the school newspaper and I was like, what?), I still think it’s a great way to put my thoughts somewhere concrete. Otherwise they tend to kind of float away in the periphery, so when I write, I’m actually thinking for real- it’s kind of just an accident that other people happen to read it afterward.

I don’t really write inspirational type stuff, but if I did, even though I’m in high school, I wouldn’t really have an issue with that. Personally, I tend to find inspiration in the weirdest things, so I know that really, there’s the inspiration and there’s the kli- if you happen to be the kli for someone else’s inspiration, kol hakavod.

And if you want to use a pen name, use a pen name, but why would there be anything at all untznius about using your name in an article?
