maybe we have a writing crisis on our hands. How can we be a light unto the nations if the nations can’t understand what we’re enlightening them about?
November 4, 2009 5:22 am at 5:22 am #665880sunflowerMemberjphone, u know the famous thing that if you would write any word and only the first and last letter will be correct, most of the time majority will be able to read it. that is how the human brain works!
November 4, 2009 5:28 am at 5:28 am #665881ronrsrMemberSunflower, that’s somewhat the way the experienced native English-readers’ mind works. Don’t forget that sometimes we write for other types of readers, such as children, people for whom English is not their native language, etc.
As Strunk & White suggested, have great sympathy for your reader.
November 4, 2009 5:29 am at 5:29 am #665882skatesMemberUh? what is this whole debate about? this is a forum where pp are stam schmoozing after long day of work ( or during work)…I don’t think anyone has patience to proofread their sentences…PP just wana get their message across! just like u won’t make pp proofread their text messages…no reason why pp here should be super careful about commas, punctuations…we have enuf of that in college;)
November 4, 2009 6:16 am at 6:16 am #665883mazcaMemberskates I learned in school that the most important part of writing is being creative and having imagination no making commas,,,,and periods……and question marks???
November 4, 2009 7:21 pm at 7:21 pm #665885haifagirlParticipantOkay. I guess I have to rephrase another post.
Skates: “pp” can be misinterpreted. Please use “people” instead.
Thank you.
November 4, 2009 10:21 pm at 10:21 pm #665886skatesMemberLol…I had a feeling you were going to comment about that…but looks like you knew I was talking about people when i said PP…because thats what people typicaly use as an abreviation!
November 4, 2009 10:28 pm at 10:28 pm #665887skatesMemberhaifagirl…unless you really think that some people are gona read “pp” and think “police patrol”…”political principles”… “peer pressure”…or “pretty place”…neither of which would make sense of course other than “people”
November 5, 2009 5:51 am at 5:51 am #665888mazcaMemberI guess new ways of writing and communicating is becoming the way of these days.
November 5, 2009 10:16 am at 10:16 am #665889haifagirlParticipantskates: Read your post aloud. Don’t read the words the abbreviations stand for. Read the abbreviations as written. Pleasant? I don’t think so.
