I was talking to my friend and he made an interesting observation, insults in Yiddish are rife with animal insults, for example, Chaya, Chaya Roha, behamyah, a stupid person is called ah ferd, ah key ah ox, a stubborn person is called ah chomer, a slop or a pervert is a chazir, a mean person is called ah hint or ah hint oif tzvay fees. I never thought about it, but I can’t think of any other languages in where animal insults are so commonly used.

    English

    a Pig, looks like a cow, stubborn as a mule/ox, (Trump’s favorite) like a dog, jacka$$, dodo, don’t be chicken, he’s a rat

It is a hind (dog) as in German it is called der hund.

Makes sense. Goyishe languages use far worse terms. By Yidden animals are not considered to be human’s friends, like they Goyim treat certain animals.

Full of bull. Being an [donkey]. Chicken. Pig. Horse’s rear end. Monkey’s uncle. Dirty dog. Turkey. Ham actor. Udder fool.

The worst insult is “Am Ha’aretz”. The very, very worst

Now I’ll leave the bathroom and go back to Beis Medrash.

@ng76 There is a book called the joys of speaking yiddish, and that covers all words.

In the alte heim many Goyim knew enough Yiddish to speak to us with.

@maskil, I would rather be associated with an am hareatz who has emucha peshuta then a lamdam who has warped haskafa,
PS other than in the zip code 08701 an am haretz is not insult.

    CS,

Do you know how the gemara defines and Am Haaretz?

Have you seen the attitude of am hoaratzim? I don’t believe you could find one with emunah peshutah.

The gemarah when describing which is better, uses mamzer and not am haaretz. That should tell you something.

    Huju,
    1) Full of bull is not describing someone as an animal
    2) Ham Actor is not referring to an animal
    3) Udder fool? really? I think this is from an utter fool.

It is brought down in Taamei Haminhagim that Kiddush Levana helps against a tooth ache. How and why? Maybe, we say there that my enemies should not do bad to me. We find in the Haggadah a hint on hakheh es shinov. When we remove shinov gematria (366) from rasha (570), we get tzadik (204). So we are saying at kiddush levana that it should be a zechus for us to make us a tzadik and not need the operation to weaken our teeth.

I’m not 08701, and, in my book, “am haaretz” is the worst insult mentioned in this thread

far worse than “a lamdan with warped hashkafa” not even close

I think you meant 33480 which is zoned exclusively for am haretzim.

DO you have something against the many talmidei chachomim who live in West Palm Beach?

From your posts, I would doubt you wouldn’t know the difference between an Am Haaretz and a Talmid Chochom if it bit you on the nose. FYI, googling something does not remove the Am Ha’aretz title.

I don’t live in 33480 either, but seems like they too find “am haretz” an insult

Currently an am haaretz wants to learn from a talmid chacham but at the time of the mishna and gemora they had a hatred towards a talmid chacham.

    RE,

Unfortunately the attitude of Amei Haaretz has not changed to the better.

I think it is readily evident.

The worst insult is a ‘Maskil’
It’s reserved for someone who utilizes the highest faculty of the human person, the gift that Hashem gave us that sets us apart from the other species, and uses it against Kedusha.

Side effect?? Its a primary symptom….just like ‘long Covid” (with a plea for mechilah from those talmedi chachamim who live in the zip code but outside of the walls of the palace)

@ubquitin, I know/knew of quite a number of simple yidden who lacked a yeshiva education and could not learn, they were simple g-d fearing people and yes am haratzem, my grandfather told me half the town in der heim were like that. On the flip side 1/3 to half of the people who attended the yeshivas in Lita ended up either in haskla or in the isms.
So would I prefer a G-d fearing am haretz over a lamdan who has warped haskafas? in a heartbeat.

I wrote before from experience as CS states that we have many people in our shul who were uneducated in talmudic studies and yearn to hear some divrei Torah.

I’m not so sure what you mena by “prefer” Regardless this thread is not about what peopel you prefer, it is about insults, particularly yiddish ones.

“Am haaretz” is in my opinion the worst insult mentioned in this thread. You do not have to agree. Obviously this is subjective.
The fact that some am haaratzim are “better people” or that you “prefer” them than some lamdanim might be true, but has absolutely zero bearing on this thread

I don’t even understand what you are trying to say. I know some ugly people I prefer them to some good looking people, this doesn’t change the fact that ugly is an insult.

    #2063089

I don’t know how you define am haaretz, but you use t.ch. too loosely. T ch can make a mistake, but is expected to review his actions and fix it. If you see t ch doing aveira in the evening, don’t approach him in the morning, as he already did teshuva

@ubiquitin, Actually the tread was about animal insults in yiddish and they are not so common in other languages, then you popped in with the am haretz comment, so I told you outside in Lakewood its in not a commonly used insult,

    not quite

“Actually the tread was about animal insults in yiddish and they are not so common in other languages”

Yes, thats how it started and I popped in to provide plenty of English examples of animal insults in English

On the subject of insults someone else (not me) popped in with the worst Yiddish insult “The worst insult is “Am Ha’aretz”. The very, very worst”

You replied to that fellow (not me) with two statements

    1) ” I would rather be associated with an am hareatz who has emucha peshuta then a lamdam who has warped haskafa,”

    2) “PS other than in the zip code 08701 an am haretz is not insult.”

Statement 1 has nothing to do with the thread as I pointed out in my last comment (somethign can still be an insult even if you prefer them because of some other quality)

Statement 2 was relevant, though incorrect which is what I replied initially, and we got conformation from other zip codes too
