I’m from Baltimore. I’ve been trying to publish an article about my Congressman because he voted for the Iran deal and it went well will Tisha B’Av. Do you feel it is important to hold your Congressman or Senator responsible for the Iran deal?

Would anyone have a recommendation regarding where I could publish my Congressman-bashing article? The local Jewish news outlets are afraid to “endorse” the challenging candidate. I appreciate any guidance.

We’re in golus. Lay low. Don’t antagonize government officials.

(P.S. to the Zionists. Israel is also in golus.)

Thank you, Joseph. But I am trying to find out how I can best utilize my right to the First Amendment.

A proper Jewish reaction takes precedence over rights granted under the Bill of Rights.

    Hey nathanfeder,

Welcome to the Coffee Room. While I don’t have any advice that is pertinent to your question, I would like to advise you to not get too discouraged by Joseph’s comments. He’s a regular here and he tends to be have very strong opinions about certain things. I’m not saying I necessarily disagree with him in this case, I’m just saying if you’re not familiar with his posting style it’s easy to get shot down.

If you don’t have anywhere else, start a blog (blogspot is supposedly very east) and email it to all your friends and let it spread from there.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

As for Joseph’s response to what makes for a “Jewish response”, I think we are both aware of the different Jewish “styles” of responding depending on who your Rav is or whichever bias you prefer within the frum world. Joseph, if not caring about nuclear chaos (specifically though construction in Iran) and the lives of thousands isn’t a concern for you, I would indeed recommend laying low.

You’re assuming your approach makes it more likely to result in Iran being less nuclear capable. Harassing your Congressman in the name of Israel, with your “Congressman-bashing article”, at this stage will result in no change in Iran’s nuclear capabilities. It, though, likely will result in creating ill-will for Jewish causes in Congress.

“Do you feel it is important to hold your Congressman or Senator responsible for the Iran deal?”

No. Only one Democrat is in any re-election difficulty as the result of her vote for the Iran deal — Debbie Wasserman Schultz — and her opponent is a far left nutcase who just happens to have opposed the deal. Several Democrats who opposed the deal are in trouble, though.

“at this stage will result in no change in Iran’s nuclear capabilities”

I didn’t really support the deal but it did result in pushing off Iran getting nuclear weapons from just a few months to over ten years. That was a big change and it is for the better.

Charlie: You misconstrued my statement by quoting me out-of-context and without my full sentence. I said “Harassing your Congressman in the name of Israel, with your “Congressman-bashing article”, at this stage will result in no change in Iran’s nuclear capabilities.” I did not say, as you implied I did, that the nuclear agreement will not (or will, as I didn’t even comment on the agreement) change Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

    Joseph and Charlie,

In Baltimore, my congressman claims to be pro-Israel (probably because his district covers many Jewish communities). But he’s just as pro-Israel as he is pro-Palestinian. He’s not liked for many reasons. It’s not about making a change in the Iran deal. It’s about making a change in the upcoming election outcome and having them realize that we do make a difference. Also,German Intelligence has shown that Iran has attempted to violate the deal more than once.

More likely the results this fall will show that opponents of the deal do NOT make a difference. If Debbie Wasserman-Schultz survives her primary this coming Tuesday there are zero Democratic supporters of the deal who are in danger of losing their seats.
