    Sorry for the typos (I was in a rush for the sake of sholom bayis)!

    When princess Diana was killed, I asked myself the same question, because in the same news there was a report about Israeli soldiers having been killed. There also, the intensity of acquaintance with the princess through the bombarding press, was at a much higher level than with soldiers we never heard of before the sad news of their passing.

    While not disputing the aspects you raised as reasons for the difference, there seems to be a simple major (less lomdish) difference.

    Humans are not driven by pure truth facts in themselves (as someone said when the lie is more rewarding nobody cares about truth).
    We are driven by intensity. Let’s say if ‘Dr. Mark’ o”h (who was one of then ten kedoshim) would have been talked about in the press while alive and then achre mot incessantly described and end with endless reactions to his killing in the press and being the only victim of this event just like with Kirk, you’d feel no less his tragedy!
