Oversight Board Upholds Trump’s Facebook Ban

Former President Donald Trump won’t return to Facebook – for now.

The social network’s quasi-independent Oversight Board voted to uphold his ban from the platform after his account was suspended four months ago for inciting violence that led to the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

While uploading the suspension, the board faulted Facebook for the way it made the decision.

“It was not appropriate for Facebook to impose the indeterminate and standardless penalty of indefinite suspension,” it said.

The board says Facebook has six months to reexamine the “arbitrary penalty” it imposed on Jan. 7 and decide on another penalty that reflects the “gravity of the violation and the prospect of future harm.”

The board says the new penalty must be “clear, necessary and proportionate” and consistent with Facebook’s rules for severe violations.

The board says if Facebook decides to restore Trump’s accounts, the company must be able to promptly address further violations.

Trump has also been permanently banned from Twitter.

  1. If “Facebook” is to be a haven for left-wing discussion, they should be more open about banning politically correct (by their standards) speech. They are a private company, not a public forum. They can no more be expected to carry “conservative” speech, than YWN could be required to allow anti-semitic postings. The Democrats as a matter of faith believe that conservatives should be “cancelled” and the First Amendment protects Facebook’s rights a private company to censor those who disagree with their owners.
There might a a consumer fraud issue since Facebook sometimes pretends it is open to everyone and solicits money by claiming to be non-political though anyone except a total fool can see this was never the case, and this might be a major legal issue if the Republicans win a future election (at present those in charge of protecting the public from false advertisers are all left-wing Democrats who are too much part of the problem to be part of a solution).

  2. Both Facebook & Twitter are repugnant and conducting themselves despicably; Why aren’t they banning rogue leaders instead of the best & most moral president ever of the United States of America?

  3. FB is a private business and they are free to refuse service. From what I’ve read the former President has his own private outlet. Free enterprise and all that good stuff.

  4. Re 147’s comment: “best & most moral president ever of the United States of America”. Are you being paid to post this preposterous nonsense? Or do you sincerely believe it? Or both?
