Suspect Arrested For String Of Lakewood Yeshiva Burglaries

lpd.jpgA River Avenue man has been charged with 11 counts of burglary in connection with a string of break-ins at local Jewish schools.

Errick Daughty, 21, admitted to police that he broke into at least nine schools during the past three months, Detective Steve Wexler said. He was arrested last week after Officer John Novak tracked footprints through five blocks of snow after a break-in at the Bais Kaila school on March 6.

While being interviewed at police headquarters, Daughty admitted his role in the Bais Kaila break-in as well as a similar incident at Talmud Torah Bais Avrohom. He told officers he committed several other burglaries but could not remember where, Wexler said.

He then agreed to accompany officers on what Wexler called a “drive-around” and pointed out seven other schools he had targeted. Those were Bnos Yakov on Kent Road, Yeshiva Tiffers Torah on East End Avenue, Yeshiva Orchos Chaim on Oberlin Avenue, Yeshivas Shagas Aryeh on New Central Avenue, Bais Yitzchok on Caranetta Drive, Bnos Pinchos on New Central Avenue and the Lakewood Cheder on James Street, according to police.

Some of those schools were targeted on multiple occasions, police said.

In all cases, Wexler said, Daughty broke into the schools, rifled through offices and took an undisclosed amount of cash. He is now being held in lieu of $135,000 bail at the Ocean County Jail in Toms River.

Also charged in connection with at least two of the robberies is 20-year-old Robert Sumrall of Prospect Avenue, who was arrested alongside Daughty. Police said he was not cooperative in speaking with investigators.

Further charges in the case may be pending, Wexler said, including those related to reported burglaries at a school on Park Terrace and a Shul at the corner of Royal Avenue and Central Court.

Police Chief Robert Lawson commended the work of Novak – who sustained a leg injury during the initial foot pursuit – as well as officers Leonard Nieves Jr., Joseph Przewoznik and William Allen; Detectives Thomas D’Elia and Gregory Staffordsmith; and Sgt. William Rodriquez for their investigative work.
