A borough has suspended an assistant director responsible for housing after a Sunday paper claimed he leads a ‘secret life’ as a Nazi.
Hammersmith and Fulham has suspended its assistant director of housing options, Gareth Mead, from his £90,000-a-year job, pending a disciplinary hearing.
The move comes after the Sunday Mirror published an article claiming Mr Mead pictured with a swastika, dressed up as a Nazi for racist games, and sent anti-Semitic and racist text messages.
His role at the council covers areas including social housing and homelessness.
Council chiefs held an emergency meeting this morning after suspending Mead last week on possible misconduct grounds after allegations by a Sunday tabloid paper.
Mead, who heads a team of about 20 staff, also sent racist texts. In one he allegedly wrote: “Gas the Jews and Wogs.” Another said: “Turn on the furnaces for those Jewish boys and let them burn…” (edited by YWN).
A spokesperson for Hammersmith and Fulham confirmed Mr Mead had been suspended, and said the hearing is expected to take place this week.
