Mir: Checks Had The Rosh Yeshiva’s ZT”L Signature

Since the petira of the Mir rosh yeshiva, HaGaon HaRav Nosson Tzvi Finkel ZT”L, there has been much discussion regarding the yeshiva’s bleak financial state and the difficulty paying rabbonim and avreichim.

Kikar Shabbat reports that the situation became so desperate that gedolei hador literally lost sleep, including HaRosh Yeshiva HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita.

This morning, 18 Cheshvan, it was learned that checks that were recently given out with salaries for Sivan, delayed due to the financial crunch, had the signature of the rosh yeshiva zt”l. It appears that he signed personally but as the situation worsened, the checks were held, fearing the bank may not honor them.

In recent days, a sizable sum was collected, enabling the administration to distribute the checks.

  1. We are all having financial problems today. I realize that this was a large institution and the help came late but it did come. There are so many people suffering today who will not get help. What a crazy, sick world this is that we get together for fundraisers, music videos all overnight for people in jail, drug smugglers, etc. but are so slow if at all to do the right thing for really good people who are in a bad situation through NO fault of their own. YWN will probably censor this and that’s a big part of the problem. We can’t fix anything unless we talk about it first.

  2. Homeless, please realize that you and the rest of the world are being supported by these choshuve kollel avreichim & bochurim who are sitting and learning.

  3. Depending on Israeli law, checks signed by a deceased person may present problems being cashed, especially if they were personal checks.

Given that the economies in most countries where frum Jews live are in a depressed state, one should expect all frum institutions to be having financial problems especially if they didn’t immediately start downsizing when the current economic crisis began four years ago.

  4. daas_yochid, realize that you have no idea what you’re talking about. Its people like you that are part of the problem – open ended kollel is NOT a part of Judaism, and never was. All the tanaim and amoraim had jobs. Some decided to live with less… but ALL of them worked for their parnasah.

Even with Yisachar Zevulun agreements, I guarantee that only the qualified bochurim would suceed in getting an agreement – if my money is going to support someone’s learning, I better be getting my money’s worth… and frankly, as someone who lives 3 blocks from the Mir Yeshiva, I KNOW that 70% of those bochurim DO NOT BELONG THERE, but should go out and work.

Yes, we need Torah, but lets stop settling for mediocrity, and give money to the real masmidim, not the guys chillin in a mir dira.
