NYC: New Taxi App’s A Share Delight

Taxi riders may soon be able to find a cab to share using a tech firm’s smartphone app.

A would-be passenger can punch in the nearest intersection and neighborhood they’re traveling to, and GetTaxi will help find someone else headed in the same direction with its Ride Share feature, the company said.

The passenger can “join” a shared ride and be picked up, or wait for others to join him or her. For simplicity, there would be one dropoff location and the fare split automatically based on the number of passengers. Riders can even split the fare and pay with their mobile devices.

“Passengers can save money, the city becomes greener, and traffic lessens as car pools for taxis become a real possibility,” GetTaxi CEO Jing Wang Herman told the Daily News.

GetTaxi is one of the firms that responded to a Taxi and Limousine Commission solicitation asking for apps that enableriders to pay fares by smartphone, hail cabs using GPS-tracking and notify passengers when someone nearby is in need of a ride.

Hallo, a company that provides such a service in London, also responded to the TLC request for bids.
