Another NYC Hospital Faces Possible Closure

emergencyA second Brooklyn hospital is facing possible closure.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the state health department has rejected a restructuring plan designed to save Interfaith Medical Center.

Deputy Health Commissioner Karen Westervelt instead told the hospital’s trustees in a July 19 letter to resubmit a modified plan to close the hospital.

Interfaith must submit the modified plan by Thursday.

Hospital officials say they’ll continue to pursue options to keep the facility open. Interfaith is currently in bankruptcy proceedings.

It serves an overwhelming low-income population in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The trustees have requested a meeting with the health department.

Meanwhile, plans are proceeding to close the financially strapped Long Island College Hospital in downtown Brooklyn.
