The Associated Press is asking Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio’s transition team to open his swearing-in ceremony to the news media.
De Blasio is to be sworn in by State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday at his Brooklyn home.
The ceremony will be streamed on NYC.gov. The transition team also plans to release photos.
The AP has a policy against using handout images unless they are of significant news value and shot in areas that the press doesn’t expect to have access to. The de Blasio team says past mayors have restricted access to such ceremonies, so there is precedent.
AP Senior Managing Editor Michael Oreskes says access to media should be provided. He notes that streaming the event means it isn’t private at all.

Does anybody really care whether the AP has access to deBlastoff and his crackerjack family? This is a complete non-issue.
