National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has demanded that Israel Police end its use of water cannons at Chareidi protests in Jerusalem, Channel 13 News reported on Tuesday evening.
The demand follows Ben-Gvir’s condemnation of the police for its discriminatory policy of enforcing order at protests, with water cannons and “skunk water” only used at Chareidi protests in Jerusalem and not at secular protests in Tel Aviv.
According to the report, Ben-Gvir’s demand has been accepted by the police leadership and water cannons will no longer be used at Chareidi protests.
The report added that Ben-Gvir reached the end of his rope earlier this week when videos of a protest in Geulah showed police officers being violent with the protesters and apparently preparing for the use of a water cannon. Ben-Gvir ordered the police leadership to investigate why violence was used against the protesters, which ultimately led to the decision to end the use of water cannons.
Ben-Gvir received a promise from the police that water cannons would no longer be used except as a last resort in life-threatening situations.

Wrong decision. The correct decision would have been to order them used in Tel Aviv too.

Agreed. Lethal force should be reserved only for the worse hafganos. Otherwise, just use old fashioned tear gas, rubber bullets etc. unless there is reason to believe the hoodlums plan to engage in violence directed against the security forces.
