NYC City Council Votes To Adopt $78.5 Billion Budget

debThe New York City Council has voted to officially adopt the city’s $78.5 billion budget agreement.

The budget passed by a vote of 46 to 1 on Friday with one abstention. Two other councilmembers were absent.

The deal was brokered by the staffs of Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, It moves to expand services for the less fortunate and begins the process of expanding the nation’s largest police force.

The centerpiece of the deal was the surprising decision to hire 1,300 police officers.

The council asked for 1,000 new policemen but de Blasio initially balked.

He later relented and authorized the hires after Police Commissioner William Bratton said they were needed for his plan to reinvent community policing.
