Community Board 12 Thanks School Officials for Their Cooperation on The Boro Park Eiruv

For years, Shabbos-observant Boro Park residents knew they could carry on Shabbos because of the Eiruv surrounding Boro Park. As the community grew, so did the need to extend the Eiruv far beyond its original borders.

Last week, the Vaad Ha’eiruv asked Community Board 12 to help facilitate the placement of an Eiruv on the building of P.S. 230, located on Albemarle Road and McDonald Avenue. CB12 reached out to school officials and arranged a meeting to discuss expanding the Eiruv. The meeting was attended by CB12 Chairman Yidel Perlstein; District Manager Barry Spitzer; Gabriella Friedlander from Councilman Brad Lander’s office; Maria Dellaragione, Principal of P.S. 230; Myles Kehoe, Department of Education Brooklyn North Facilities Manager; Joe Meehan, P.S. 230 Custodian; and Rabbi Moishe Yosef Unsdorfer from the Vaad Ha’eiruv.

“I would like to thank Ms. Dellaragione, Mr. Kehoe and all the school officials for their understanding and willingness to address the needs of our diverse community,” said Chairman Yidel Perlstein. “Our community is a beacon of mutual respect and working together, for which I am most grateful.”

“I am inspired by the cooperation extended to the community by the P.S. 230 administration,” said District Manager Barry Spitzer. “They made a great effort to understand a complex issue and acted swiftly to provide any support that was needed.”

“Part of my service to the residents of my district is advocating on behalf of all communities to ensure their religious practice. I was very glad to work alongside Community Board 12 to advocate for accommodations that would allow the Eiruv to be utilized by the greater community. You have my commitment that I will continue work alongside the community in this endeavor, and I want to especially thank everyone at P.S. 230 for working so quickly to resolve this issue,” said Councilmember Brad Lander.

“Thank you to Barry Spitzer and Yidel Perlstein at Community Board 12 and to the leadership of P.S. 230 for working to improve the Boro Park Eiruv,” said New York City Councilman David G. Greenfield. “Special thanks go to Principal Maria Dellaragione and the Department of Education’s Brooklyn North Facilities Manager Myles Kehoe for taking the community’s concerns seriously and acting promptly to resolve the situation.”

  1. Please note that this is post is an affront to the honor of the Posek Hador of the previous generation who unequivocally invalidated any Brooklyn Eruvin.

  2. Shame on those people that are going against the gedolei hador from the previos generation that clearly held that there it is not allowed to have an eiruv any were in brooklyn

  3. the article seems to indicate that the eruv allows everyone to carry within it on shabbos. many rabbonim including r moshe feinstein zatzal held it is assur midoraysa to use such an eruv.

  4. The first 3 commentors are %100 correct.

At least this so called Eruv is limited to Boro Park. B”H in Flatbush, there is not one single Rav that gives any sort of Hechsher for the alleged Eruv. That one infamous “shteeble” had to shlep all the way to Canada to get a “heter” from some “Rav” to use the Eruv here. Very brave. As our Rav said: Baruch Hashem the Chasidim are not moving into Flatbush.

  5. @not getting involved,
Shame on you and your so called Rav. Whatever the heter people have to use the eruv noone is holding a gun to your head making you carry. Your holier than thou attitude is just plain sinas chinam.
In case you’re wondering, no I don’t use the eruv but that’s my choice.

  6. Not getting involved #4: You must have an Open Orthodox or Conservative “Rav”. No Yirei Hashem or even a pashut frum person would have said what you allegedly quote in his name.

As an aside, you must be pretty blind if you haven’t noticed chasidim are moving in all over Flatbush for the past 15 years.

P.S. I don’t and never did use the eruv.
