No-Confidence Vote in Knesset Results in an Embarrassment for Coalition, Albeit a Technicality

knessetIt was not a pleasant day for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and members of his coalition as the opposition succeeded in passing a no-confidence motion to topple the coalition. The vote passed 54 in favor of toppling the coalition and only 53 in favor of the coalition.

There were many smiles among opposition Members of Knesset, aware of the blow they delivered to the Prime Minister’s image and to that of his coalition government. Despite the successful vote, the coalition was not toppled for this cannot be accomplished without a majority of the MKs, meaning at least 61 votes in favor of toppling the coalition.

Nevertheless, the opposition parties enjoyed the moment and their victory, symbolic as it may be.
