NJSP Urges Drivers To Stay Off Roads

New Jersey authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and off the roads while a monster winter storm socks the Garden State.

State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones says no major problems were being reported early Sunday afternoon on the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and other major roads, though the speed limit had been dropped to 35 mph in several areas.

But numerous accidents and spinouts were reported on local roadways, and conditions were quickly worsening as the day progressed.

Jones says residents should avoid all travel if possible.

But those who must venture out should take cell phones and a “winter weather kit” with blankets, water, food, flashlights and other essential items.

The heaviest snows were expected to fall through midnight, and gusty winds were expected to create blizzard conditions in some areas, especially along the coast.
